Job summary

Join our friendly and professional team to: Manage the biobanking tissue and blood collection pathways, tissue processing, histology and molecular laboratory services. Line manager the technical team. Build strong relationships with external academic and commercial users.

Main duties of the job

Act as a recognised source of technical expertise; both across the College and to external service users; in the biobanking of human tissue and laboratory processing of tissue using histological and molecular techniques. 2. Establish bespoke biobanking pathways to meet research needs, utilising negotiation and influencing skills to gain support of clinical teams. 3. Lead on protocol development and troubleshooting for FFPE processing and embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, H&E staining, blood processing, DNA/ RNA extraction and slide scanning. Optimise and implement gold standard practices using modern techniques. 4. Responsible for planning the order of work based on current and future capacity and expected to use independent decision making in prioritising work and identifying solutions to problems that arise. 5. Develop and maintain strong relationships and communication links with research and clinical teams, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. 6. Receive and respond to everyday enquiries from/to ICHTB staff and researchers in relation to sample collection, receipt, processing, storage and retrieval. 7. Provide expertise technical advice to identify suitable tissue that meets internal and external researcher needs. 8. To provide a timely and effective service to others in the acquisition, processing and despatch of tissue.

About the role This new role - Tissue Bank Operations and Partnerships Manager - will be responsible for identifying and securing new service users to enable significant growth of the Imperial College Healthcare Tissue and Biobank (ICHTB) beyond Imperial. Your efforts and technical expertise will help facilitate and enable research; by ensuring the ICHTB provides high quality human tissue that meets research needs; and with excellent customer service.   • You will possess high level technical expertise to manage the laboratory and tissue banking pathways, ensuring high quality banked patient tissue and operation in accordance with regulatory requirements.

Around 7,000 samples are issued to projects annually, with around 60 new project applications each year. We aim to expand our service outside of the ICL/ICHT to other academic institutions and commercial companies.     • BSc in a biological science, or equivalent experience.

    Desirable

    • Post-graduate course or specialist diploma related to laboratory or service
    • management, biobanking ethics; and/or business management.
    • Leadership and development courses.

    Experience

    • Experience in the day-to-day organisation and running of a scientific or clinical
    • service, research support service and/or biobanking at a managerial or supervisory
    • level.
    • Experience in laboratory premises, facility, and equipment management
    • Experience in line management, supervision and mentoring.
    • Practical experience in handling blood and tissue, histological techniques and basic
    • molecular techniques such as DNA/ RNA extraction and the ability to optimise and
    • troubleshoot protocols.
    • Experience working within a quality management system; including document
    • control, audits, adverse events, CAPAs.
