Job summary

The Joint Research Office works to serve the research community across the Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC). Organised into specialist teams, JRO staff facilitate the management of research grants and contracts in the Faculty of Medicine. The JRO Contracts Team provides advice on all matters relating to terms and conditions of externally funded research projects and related agreements.

Main duties of the job

  • Draft, review and negotiate various types of research funding agreements and research-related contracts (collaboration agreements, sub-awards, Material Transfer Agreements, Confidentiality Agreements, etc.), referring to the Contracts Manager as required.
  • To have and deploy good working knowledge of contractual issues such as intellectual property, confidentiality, publications, liabilities and other related issues within the context of College and NHS policies.
  • Prepare draft agreements in discussion with research staff taking into consideration specific project requirements.
  • Review draft agreements received from funders and collaborator and propose changes, ensuring consistency and adherence to set standards, aiming to achieve the best possible terms, referring to the Contracts Manager as required.
  • Liaise with funders, researchers and administrative staff to reach agreement on changes to draft contracts.
  • Appreciation of different funding mechanisms, schemes, policies and standard terms.
  • Liaise and interact with research and admin staff giving clear and concise advice on costing and pricing of contracts.

  • Experience of negotiating research contracts, ideally in the Higher Education Sector or similar context
  • Understanding for the need and practice of customer focus and customer relationship skills
  • Good knowledge of contracting issues such as intellectual property, confidentiality, publications, liabilities and other related issues
  • Strong inter-personal skills, with the ability to develop effective working relationships with all levels of staff
  • Ability to use initiative and work independently and as part of a team
