The Student Counselling Service Manager will lead, develop, and enhance our Student Counselling Service and deliver counselling to student clients.

The Service is delivered from our Centre for Student Life and online. A focus on change and innovation is key, as is a willingness to work in partnership with our wider student support professional staff colleagues across the University and external partners.

The post is full time, 35 hours per week, and open ended.

Salary: £49,794-£54,395 per annum (Grade 7)

This postholder will normally be based at the Cardiff University Centre for Student Life in Cardiff city centre. We work flexibly, therefore some element of home working may be suitable and appropriate at certain times of year. Specific arrangements will be discussed with the successful candidate.

We offer an excellent renumeration package including 37 days annual leave per year plus 8 bank holidays, pro rata for part time staff, as well as access to a range of staff discounts and development opportunities through accredited training.

Main duties of the job

The Student Counselling Service Manager will lead, develop, and enhance our Student Counselling Service and deliver counselling to student clients.

The post is part of the senior management of Health and Wellbeing within the Student Life department. The post holder will contribute to the leadership of the full diversity of our health and wellbeing provision, and the Student Life department more widely.

Key Duties

  • Manage and lead the Student Counselling Service, ensuring departmental objectives are communicated and engaged with, planning, organising and delegating work, monitoring progress and intervening as required
  • Contribute to the long-term strategic planning and management of the Student Life Department, interpreting strategy into work priorities and setting the standards for the Student Counselling Service as part of our wider Health and Wellbeing provision
  • Contribute to the development of initiatives related to student health and wellbeing support broadly which have a University wide impact, including creating new initiatives and developing innovative responses to student mental health needs
  • Manage performance, induction and development of the Student Counselling team
  • Support and guide team members in welfare issues, escalating as necessary to relevant support areas
  • Ensure the delivery of psychological counselling to our students, adapting these according to changes in workload and customer requirements and maintaining relevant professional accreditations across this service
  • Collaborate with others in order to develop processes and procedures in delivery of our student counselling provision with a focus on evidence-based service development and continuous improvement
  • Undertake the training of others in areas relating to student counselling and our student support provision more broadly
  • Undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance and maintain relevant professional accreditations
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts to help improve service levels, developing appropriate communication links with the Universitys Schools/Directorates and external agencies as required, particularly the NHS and third sector
  • Gather and analyse data to inform decisions, establishing basic trends and patterns in data and creating reports as appropriate
