About us
The post will
be located in the Respiratory Medicine Unit (RMU), which is led by Professor
Ian Pavord. The RMU is situated in the John Radcliffe Hospital, where there is a dedicated clinical research area for airways diseases
(Level 2) and a wet laboratory (including a sputum lab) at Level 7. The unit receives support from the NIHR
Biomedical Research Centre, with a dedicated Respiratory Theme. It comprises 3
Principal Investigators (Professors Ian Pavord, Tim Hinks and Nayia Petousi). The groups research interests are in
translational research in asthma and COPD, and aims to enahnce understanding of
airway pathobiology, improve diagnosis, phenotyping and patient stratification
and ultimately the targeting of therapies to the right patients at the right
time. It builds on excellent clinical programmes in airways diseases, clinical
randomized trials of therapeutic agents,
as well as cutting-edge basic science in respiratory immunology and
respiratory physiology.
We were the first to identify
eosinophilic, type-2 high airway inflammation as a key treatable trait in
patients with asthma and COPD. We recognised that this pattern of airway
inflammation is associated with an increased risk of exacerbations of airway
disease and corticosteroid responsiveness.
