Job summary
This is an
opportunity for a motivated nurse to join our existing team to undertake
clinical research in respiratory diseases.
The portfolio includes observational
studies, clinical trials of investigational medicinal products (CTIMPs) and
medical device trials. Research areas include lung cancer, pleural diseases,
COPD, asthma, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, chronic cough, and
respiratory sleep and breathing disorders.
Key elements of the role include co-ordination
and the provision of care for participants on the trials, the collection and
preparation of biological samples and collection of trial data.
Main duties of the job
The post holder
will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the respiratory
trials/studies allocated to them. They will be expected take part in all
aspects of respiratory care & trial assessments, including spirometry,
phlebotomy, ECGs, observations and history taking. They will also need to:
Have
excellent record keeping skills and maintain files and notes accurately.
Educate
patients re: medication use and completing diaries and train relevant health
care workers regarding trial protocols.
Liaise
with the multidisciplinary team and trial monitors.
Attend
relevant training which sometimes requires travel
Research
Support
the research team to recruit patients into respiratory trials under the
guidance of the local investigator, attending
meetings and clinics as necessary
Support
the clinicians in gaining informed consent, undertaking randomisation,
treatment allocation as stipulated in the trial protocol
Study
Co-ordination
Support
the trial management staff with study set up as requested and be responsible
for maintaining the Investigator Site File for the trial from study start to
study end
Ensure detailed and accurate records are maintained
by you and the rest of the research team
Professional
Adhere
to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct, maintaining patient
confidentiality at all times

The Oxford
Respiratory Trials Unit (ORTU) is a Clinical Trials Unit which specialises in
the design, delivery and administration of trials across the scope of
Respiratory Medicine.
We run national
and international trials related to our own academic areas, as well as
supporting trials led by other teams. Our scope of work includes clinical
trials at all phases, including translational studies, phase II discovery
studies and multicentre definitive randomised trials.
We partner with a
broad range of academic funders (National Institute of Health Research, Medical
Research Council, British Lung Foundation, National Cancer Research Institute,
CRUK) and partners in industry. Key funding for ORTU is derived from the
Comprehensive Local Research Network (CLRN) and the Oxford NIHR Biomedical

- Work closely with other research nurses and practitioners in the delivery team to ensure optimal care and support for trial participants in our research portfolio.
- Participate in team meetings and attend relevant training sessions and investigator meetings, which may require travel.
Desirable skills include venepuncture, spirometry and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
