Job summary

The post holder will be responsible for providing strategic, clinical and professional leadership and line management to the clinical research delivery team.

The post holder will have responsibility for overseeing the management and delivery of studies, in partnership with key stakeholders to ensure that studies are delivered to exceptionally high standards that incorporate Good Clinical Practice regulations. The post holder will be responsible to ensure that research and clinical care is delivered whilst utilising resources effectively and efficiently, continually reviewing the systems and processes to identify areas for improvement.

As a leadership position the post holder will also work with other senior and lead nursing staff responsible for research services across the University of Oxford and OUHFT.

The post holder will demonstrate effective leadership; setting, monitoring and maintaining professional standards. They will be an integral member of the ORTU management team, providing nursing advice, managing the nursing team, and contributing to innovative solutions to workforce and capacity management.

Main duties of the job

Be a highly competent and visible practitioner ensuring the provision of excellent, evidence-based nursing care for patients taking part in clinical research programmes within the ORTU portfolio.

Be responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care during participation in clinical research visits.

Ensure effective delivery of a high standard of nursing care for all patients within the research team by providing clinical leadership, direction, supervision and maintaining effective systems of work.

Provide effective professional leadership, direct line-management, support and role development for the Research Nurse and Practitioner team.

Lead the future development of the ORTU Research Nurse team by identifying the needs of the group and individuals.

Lead in the recruitment, induction, training and supervision of new members of the team.

Be responsible for managing research nursing personnel, and any designated clerical staff ensuring that they have relevant personal development plans, an annual appraisal and that any concerns regarding performance or development are dealt with promptly and relevant HR policies are adhered to.

Adhere to NMC Code of Conduct at all times and practice within the NMC Scope of Professional Practice, maintaining confidentiality at all times.

The Oxford Respiratory Trials Unit (ORTU) is a Clinical Trials Unit which specialises in the design, delivery and administration of trials across the scope of Respiratory Medicine.

We run national and international trials related to our own academic areas, as well as supporting trials led by other teams. Our scope of work includes clinical trials at all phases, including translational studies, phase II discovery studies and multicentre definitive randomised trials.

About the Role

Come and work with our research nurses and practitioners to deliver a portfolio of trials across a broad spectrum of respiratory diseases.

You will work in the Oxford Respiratory Trials Unit (ORTU) and be responsible for the day-to-day management of the team and driving the strategic growth and development of the team.

In addition to leading the team, you will work clinically, supporting recruitment andparticipant visits for a portfolio of trials. The trials being delivered by the team includes observational studies, clinical trials of investigational medicinal products (CTIMPs) and medical device trials.

About You

Applicants should have aUK recognised first level degree (HEI Level 6) in Nursing or specialist nursing field as well as experience of nurse leadership, management and multidisciplinary working.

You will also need to demonstrate that you have:

  • An ability to work independently and without direct supervision and also as part of a team with a broad range of people.
  • An ability to problem solve in the context of research projects.
  • The ability to prioritise and manage own workload and others.
  • An ability to evaluate policies and strategies and influence research projects undertaken at ORTU/OUHFT.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory and governance requirements for clinical trials.
  • An understanding of UK CRN and its relevance to research.
  • Experience of managing budgets.
  • Experience of clinical research management at senior level.

Having knowledge and previous experience of nursing patients with respiratory disorderswould be a desirable attribute for this post.
