Job summary

As a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer you will use your previous research, teaching, or high-quality practice experience to deliver specialist and generalist knowledge, and skills to students of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. You will use different learning and teaching methods, sensitive to different cultures and students ways of learning.Your level of appointment will be in line with your previous experience and the University will offer you career development opportunities. You will work within an established team of academic and professional staff and will contribute to enhancing the work and the reputation of the School as a whole, collaborating inter professionally and effectively with colleagues in the School, University and externally as appropriate.

Depending upon your existing qualifications, you may be required to complete the Universitys Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice to support your development in your new role and research training.

The nature of this contribution will vary according to your experience and your direction of work will be required to fit with the Schools strategic plans.

Main duties of the job

Although for most of the time your teaching will focus on surgery for our ODP students, interprofessional education is a key part of our learning and teaching approach and you will support students from other professions. Using contemporary evidence, you will prepare students for future clinical practice which supports embedding research into practice for patient benefit.You will undertake scholarly activity, maintain or work towards being research active and contribute to the Schools enterprise and innovation within the UK and internationally.

Although this appointment is based at the Medway campus, you may also be required to work across the University estate which may include supporting the delivery of courses in Canterbury and outside of Kent within the South East of England.

Applications are invited for a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Operating Department Practice. If you are a registered Healthcare Professional with experience in perioperative care and are enthusiastic about supporting Operating Department Practice learning and research we would be pleased to hear from you.

You will provide maternity cover for a period of 12 months where you will join an ambitious academic team with shared research and professional interests in operating department practice, entrepreneurship, and improvement and implementation within the perioperative setting. Most of the time you will support our Operating Department Practice students, however interprofessional education is a key part of our learning and teaching approach and you may teach other students on health, social care and public health courses. We would particularly welcome applicants who are interested in developing a clinical academic career or would like to gain experience in an academic environment for a possible future career move. We would be happy to discuss the possibility of this position being a secondment from your current substantive role.

You will work within an established and friendly group of academic and professional staff, contributing to enhancing the work and reputation of the school as a whole, collaborating inter-professionally with colleagues in the School, University and externally as appropriate. You will undertake scholarly activity, maintain or work towards being research active and contribute to the schools enterprise and innovation within the UK and internationally. The nature of this contribution will vary according to your experience, and your direction of work will be required to fit with the Schools strategic plans.We would especially welcome applicants from those with an interest in all phases of perioperative care, surgical first assistance or critical care.

You will use your knowledge of best practice in your profession and education methods, combined with excellent communication skills to support students in their learning to become safe, autonomous and competent to work in Operating Department Practice. You will work closely with all stakeholders to co-produce teaching materials to create an inclusive environment for students. You will continue your own personal and professional development as an academic using the evidence base and research to inform teaching.

We welcome applications from UK registered experienced practitioners who have a minimum of a relevant first Honours degree and/or relevant professional experience. You will be able to offer high-quality practice knowledge and skills relevant to our Operating Department Practice students and be committed to inter-professional higher education. You will have a sound understanding of the UK statutory and professional requirements, evidence of active continuing professional development and have a commitment to developing your research expertise or extending this further.
