Job responsibilities

1. To provide academic leadership in the strategic development and delivery of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) across the undergraduate medical curriculum, working with other members of the medical school faculty.

2. Provide training and mentorship to staff in PBL facilitation, assessment, and feedback.

3. Collaborate with the Phase leads to ensure integration of PBL aligns with the overall pedagogical approaches of the school and that the cases, are clinically relevant, evidence-based, and aligned with GMC outcomes.

4. Innovate and evaluate PBL approaches in collaboration with faculty and quality assurance teams to ensure PBL practices meet regulatory and accreditation standards.

5. Monitor and evaluate the impact of PBL on student engagement, performance, and satisfaction.

6. Support faculty in designing, delivering, and assessment of learning outcomes, as facilitated via PBL and related activities, including the setting, marking and moderation of work, individually or collectively as part of a team in accordance with quality assurances procedures.

7. To work with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across the College of Health, Life and Environmental Science for PBL as required, to ensure that interdisciplinary learning is embedded within the Medical School

8. To design and deliver on-going faculty training and development including collaborating with the Deputy Placement Lead (DPL) to prepare NHS Tutors to ensure the aims of the Medical School MBChB are appropriately delivered.

9. To provide advice and support for issues relating to student support arising on a day-to- day basis in the PBL, liaising with the MBChB Student Support & Guidance Lead and taking on the responsibilities of a University Academic Tutor (UAT) as required.

10. To undertake the duties of a PBL facilitator, as required.

11. To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees and working groups within the School and College.

12. To participate in the recruitment of students, including selection events and open days.

13. To engage in scholarship, disseminating findings through conference presentations and journal articles, books, books and other forms appropriate to the discipline.

14. To participate fully in the life of the school and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Dean of School or their nominee.

15. Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.

16. Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety, and well-being and that of other staff and students.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• A good first degree in a relevant subject area.
• PhD in a field related to biomedical science, and / or relevant professional qualification and / or equivalent professional experience.
• PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (or equivalent) and / or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy / Advance HE and / or equivalent professional experience. *

Experience

Essential

• Experience of facilitating PBL at undergraduate or postgraduate level preferably for medical undergraduates.
• Experience of innovative and successful curriculum design.

Desirable

• Experience of preparing and delivering training for other tutors.
• Experience of working with the GMC and experience of working with Quality Assurance of Basic Medical Education (QABME) processes.

Essential

• Demonstrable ability to enthuse, motivate and facilitate student learning using a variety of methods of learning and teaching including online modalities.
• Demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to health and well-being issues in both staff and students.
• Evidence of making a significant contribution to both student recruitment and support activities (or willingness to do so).
• Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a range of people including students, lecturers, managers, representatives of external organisations and the public, both orally and in writing.
