Job summary

The educational aims of the department are to ensure that midwives, at the point of registration, are equipped to provide skilled, knowledgeable, respectful and compassionate care. Women and families are at the heart of our teaching and this is reflected in our knowledgeable, kind and compassionate students. The Maternity Service User Group supported by the Lead Midwife of Education (LME) play a key part in the student learning journey from selection days to assessment and evaluation promoting student empathy.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be committed to promoting evidence based best practice that underpins critical thinking, leadership, decision-making and problem-solving skills required to enable students to fulfil this role.

By utilising expert knowledge and skills, the post holder will have the opportunity to teach across the BSc (Hons) Midwifery; MSc Shortened Midwifery programme and other courses within the School; lead agreed modules; assess students and supervise students Independent study. The post holder will engage in curriculum development to develop flexible practitioners who can transfer and synthesise skills and knowledge to meet the demands of differing practice environments, and who recognise the accountability and responsibilities of the midwifes role.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. To contribute to academic and clinical skills teaching at post-registration and post-graduate level within the: BSc (Hons) Midwifery and MSc Midwifery (shortened), drawing on ones own area of specialism and to design teaching sessions which maximise the integration of academic theory to clinical practice.

2. To contribute to the assessment process for students including the setting, marking and moderation of work, individually or collectively as part of a team in accordance with quality assurance procedures (including PSRB standards).

3. To contribute to the design and development of innovative, inclusive, and inspiring learning materials and assessments including e-learning.

4. To act as a Personal Academic Tutor.

5. To engage as an Academic Assessor in order to collate and confirm student achievement of NMC proficiencies and programme outcomes.

6. To participate in tripartite arrangements with students and clinical supervisors to facilitate effective partnership working and student support.

7. To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees within the School and College.

8. To participate in the recruitment of students, including selection events and open days.

9. To undertake academic leadership roles as required to support delivery of the courses, such as module leadership, course leadership, admissions tutor.

10. To participate in annual staff development and review processes.

11. To actively engage in scholarship, research and professional / academic publication in ways that contribute to the University / Schools objectives and contribute to ensuring up-to-date, leading-edge teaching.

12. To participate fully in the life of the School and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of School or her / his nominee.

  • Current NMC registration as a Midwife.

  • Essential for appointment as Senior Lecturer: Masters degree (or at final completion).
  • Essential for appointment as Senior Lecturer: Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education and / or Fellowship of the HEA.
  • Higher Qualification (PhD).

Experience

  • Significant relevant professional knowledge and experience in Midwifery as an academic and / or practitioner.
  • Clear evidence of sustained continuous professional development.

Desirable
