Primary Care Medical Educator

Job summary

To deliver hands-on educational support and clinical supervision within GP training environments serving high-inequality populations. The postholder will directly support the development of trainees, trainers, and placements that reflect NHS England's strategic priorities: transitioning from treatment to prevention, enabling digital care, and strengthening community-based services. This is a practical, teaching-focused role aimed at improving quality, equity, and access to GP training in underserved areas.

We are looking to recruit to 5 posts at 1 session per week; this is a fixed term role until 31 March 2027.

The roles will cover the Northwest: Cheshire & Mersey, Greater Manchester and Lancashire & South Cumbria.

Remuneration will be at GP00 point of national GP educator pay scale.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

  • Providedirect clinical teaching, supervision, and mentoringto GP trainees working in practices located in areas of high deprivation or health inequality.
  • Work alongside trainers and practice teams to ensure the learning environment supports curriculum delivery and trainee development.
  • Facilitatesmall-group teaching, case-based discussions, and formative assessment sessions tailored to the needs of trainees in community and underserved settings.
  • Helpembed NHS England prioritiesinto day-to-day teaching:

o Emphasiseprevention-focused carein clinical reasoning

o Support use and understanding ofdigital tools and remote consultation

o Reinforce the value of community-centred, primary care-led pathways

  • Identify and supportnew or developing training practicesby providing educational input, feedback, and informal quality improvement coaching.
  • Work collaboratively with TPDs and Associate Deans to identify trainees or supervisors needing additional support, and contribute to remediation or development plans where appropriate.
  • Encouragereflective practiceand trainee engagement with social determinants of health and population health management principles.
  • Support inclusive learning and promote equity in training experience across all placements

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Registered Medical or Dental Practitioner with a current licence to practise or hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (or equivalent) in Public Health (for roles in School of Public Health).
  • Membership/Fellowship of a College, Faculty or professional association relevant to the advertised role's Specialty.
  • Applicants should either work in NHS clinical practice (or similar setting) or should have previously undertaken clinical practice within the last 2 years prior to the intended start date of the role
  • Applicants, regardless of professional background, must have a track record of professionalism in line with the principles set out in Good Medical Practice and compatible with appointment in a senior clinical educator role.
  • Attendance at courses aimed to support educational development.
  • Active involvement in, and up to date with, NHS appraisal processes.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Good working knowledge of the NHS, its structures and processes.
  • Demonstrable track record of delivery in service and education.
  • Experience of working with learners and doctors in training in an educational context.
  • Experience of clinical and educational leadership including across multi-professional teams.
  • Understanding of developments involving the relevant Colleges/Faculties, professional bodies, National Institute for Health Research and academic training, NHS organisations and regulatory bodies.
