Job summary

A rare opportunity has arisen in the North East and Yorkshire Regional team within NHS England for a Chief Operating Officer. This is a key leadership role in the regional health system, with responsibility, in conjunction with other leaders from across the professional spectrum, to lead teams to support systems to deliver improved quality, productivity and performance for the region's population, in line with NHS and other governmental priorities.

Main duties of the job

The Chief Operating Officer will lead on monitoring performance against annual operating plans and constitutional standards; supporting ICBs, providers and systems to optimise their overall performance, to reduce unwarranted clinical variation and to ensure the most effective and efficient use of resources across the health service. This will require high calibre, credible and trusted leadership to support commissioners, providers and systems to deliver and commission high quality care in line with the requirements of Long Term Plan.

The post holder, as a member of the regional executive team, will support the Regional Director to deliver the objectives of NHS England and provide professional support to the Regional Director. They may lead or support initiatives set out by the Chief Operating Officer for England in relation to commissioning or the national frameworks for performance, intervention and oversight.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.

NHS England hold a Sponsor Licence; this means that we may be able to sponsor you providing the Home Office requirements are met. To be eligible for sponsorship through the Skilled Worker route you'll usually need to be paid the 'standard' salary rate of at least £38,700 per year, or the 'going rate' for your job, whichever is higher.
