An exciting opportunity has arisen within the North East and Yorkshire Region to recruit a PA Workforce Lead (0.4FTE) to lead and support this important programme of work.
The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan has a key focus on developing and expanding the healthcare workforce to expedite access to care and improve outcomes and experiences for patients, and their carers and families. Medical Associate Professions (MAPs) form an important part of this expansion.
The health and care professions team are looking for an experienced healthcare professional to support the delivery of a wide range of functions that ensures the successful implementation of Physician Associates (PA) and Anaesthetic Associates (AA) at regional and sub-regional level. This is an evolving role integrally linked to the wider workforce transformation agenda, innovation in curricula development and workforce wellbeing strategies.
This role offers excellent opportunities for personal and professional development as part of a wider team providing leadership and management to the development of our future workforce in our region.
Please note: Whilst this role is titled PA Workforce Lead, the successful applicant would work across both Physicians Associate and Anaesthetic Associate professions, bringing together our Medical Associate Professions within the region.
Main duties of the job
Working within the health and care professions team, the PA Workforce Lead will be involved in multiple aspects in relation to the MAPs agenda. Key duties include:
Providing leadership and oversight of MAPs within the region
Supporting scoping exercises having oversight of numbers on training programmes and those employed within the NHS, as well as overseeing tariff placement payments
Linking with key partners including Education Providers and Employers to support growth targets
Collaborating with other regional and national teams and initiatives that support these roles e.g. preceptorship schemes, additional funding offers
Leading and supporting the PA/AA Ambassador scheme regionally (subject to funding)

The post holder will have proven leadership capability, extensive clinical experience of working in multi-professional teams and working with the MAPs agenda.
The role involves working with internal and external regional stakeholders and the post holder will need to establish and maintain positive stakeholder relationships, facilitating discussions to ensure effective engagement and responsiveness, to support and capture local innovation and develop best practice. They will provide expert professional and clinical advice and through scoping and defining current MAPs provision.
They will ensure processes are documented, roles and responsibilities are clearly defined and oversee their ongoing and sustained delivery. The post holder will work with colleagues in other regions to develop further consistency and commonality across education and training in England.
The post holder will also ensure they work to the principles within NHSEs Quality Framework ensuring quality learning environments for all learners and that patient safety and quality improvement is at the core of all activities.
The post holder will contribute to workforce transformation programmes, advising on the contribution of MAPs roles and supporting the embedding of these roles across the system.
The focus of this role is to:
Lead the development and roll out of the PA and AA Workforce Supply strategy for NEY working with service providers and HEIs to maintain and grow the supply in accordance with service need.
Manage the PA and AA Ambassador scheme on behalf of NHSE NEY, which will include budget management, appointing ambassadors to the roles, liaising with local Faculties and service providers with regard to enabling the take up of Physician Associate roles in service.
Conduct a scoping exercise to identify current qualified PA/AA workforce in NEY, including baseline numbers, demand, and exemplar services, whilst identifying challenges and barriers to retention and attrition. This will enable recommendations to NHSE regional and national team, and other stakeholders on future workforce development investment priorities for MAPs.
Support local faculties and service providers in the development of PA preceptorship programmes.
Represent NHSE NEY at national MAPs Development and Liaison meetings as required.
Support the identification, project development and implementation of proven role extension and advancement opportunities for MAPs within NEY.
