Job summary

An exciting opportunity is available to join the Directorate of Multi-Professional Dental Education as Associate Dental Dean on a fixed term contract until 31 March 2024. The successful applicant will be a member of the Dental Executive Team and work with the senior leadership team and key members of the wider health economy to further develop and support the strategic delivery of dental education and training specifically across north Cumbria.

The post holder must have experience of postgraduate dental education and training along with extensive knowledge of dental provision and the issues affecting remote and rural locations.

The post has an allocation of two sessions per week. The post is offered as a NHSE employed position at GP04 on the dental educators' payscale.

The postholder must be based in Cumbria and have an extensive local knowledge of the area and NHS dental services.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have experience of, and commitment to, postgraduate dental education and the delivery of high quality educational and training.The post holder must hold current, or demonstrate previous, registration with the GDC as a Dentist

Whilst focusing on dental education and training across north Cumbria, with clear leadership from the Postgraduate Dental Dean, the post holder must also support the strategic vision for the long term recruitment and retention of a dental and oral health workforce. The post holder will be able to work on national reform and develop effective strategies and operational policies for promoting innovation across the region with regards to Dentistry in line with the actions set out in HEE's Advancing Dental Care Review Report and support the work of the Dental Education Reform Programme (DERP).

Working closely with colleagues in NHS England, Public Health England, Local Authorities, the GDC and other professional bodies to ensure Dentistry and Oral Health are embedded in strategic partnership working to fulfil the requirements of the NHS Long Term Plan and the strategic direction of the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board.

The post holder will have demonstrable experience of leadership roles and the ability to be an advocate and positive role model, together with experience in programme management, educational support and quality processes.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Job responsibilities

The core purpose of this team is to:

Deliver Postgraduate dental education

Assure and manage the quality and improvement of education and training, meeting regulator standards

Deliver statutory responsibilities defined by the Medical and Dental Act including acting as Responsible Officer for Doctors in Training

Provide clinical & professional leadership to education and training policy, regulations, standards, reform and delivery

Assure the quality and improvement of education and training.

Focus on addressing the gaps in the workforce across medicalroles, professions, healthcare pathways and geographies through education and training.

Deliver and co-ordinateofnationwide commissioned, education and training programmes.

Recruit, manage and distribute education and training that requires nationwide delivery, coordination and oversight.

Maximise the use of digital, technology and innovation in the delivery of education and training.

This role sits within the Dental Directorate.

The post holder is responsible for developing, reviewing, quality managing and leading on maximising education and training opportunities across north Cumbria

The post holder will have experience of, and commitment to primary care dental education with a focus on north Cumbria. Whilst focusing on Postgraduate Dental education and Training, with clear leadership from the Postgraduate Dental Dean, the post holder must also support the strategic vision for postgraduate dental education with emphasis on remote and rural challenges.

The post holder will be able to work on national dental reform and develop effective strategy and operational policies for promoting innovation across the region with regards to Dental education and training. Working closely with colleagues in NHS England, Public Health England, the ICB, the national Dental Education Reform Programme, Local Dental Networks, regulators and professional bodies to ensure Dental education and training is embedded in strategic partnership working to fulfil the requirements of the NHS Long Term Plan. They will have a clear understanding of the current dental contract and future contract reform.

The postholder will be an active member of Directorate of Multi-Professional Dental Educations Dental Executive Team (DET).

The post holder must have experience of Postgraduate Dental Education and knowledge of challenges facing remote and rural locations.

Delivering Results/Functional Responsibilities

Act as a member of Dental Executive Team and any other key strategic meetings as appropriate.

Ensure that all commissioned activity meets qualitive requirements and report regularly to the Postgraduate Dental Dean

Innovate in all aspects of dental foundation education and training by liaising with and having good working relationships with colleagues to ensure effective training and value for money

Oversee the approval, training and performance monitoring of dental foundation Educational Supervisors via the TPDs

Provide a robust framework for the effective performance management of TPDs within the Directorate to include feedback and appraisal

Organise and monitor faculty development programmes to meet the needs of Educational Supervisors to deliver effective and high-quality dental foundation training to meet their responsibilities to NHSE

Deliver on a wide range of activities and projects, as identified by post holders line manager. Drive the strategy for supporting and ensuring alignment across the system with regards to dental education and training

Ensure that appropriate governance arrangements are in place to support Dental Training and education and that any associated risks are identified and reviewed on a regular basis

Commitment to high standards of education and training as defined by the General Dental Council and other national bodies with respect to training posts, delivery of curriculum requirements and other education programmes.

Commitment to national vision, policies and processes for effective educational delivery and to drive innovation and improvements to healthcare delivery.
