Job summary

This is a permanent role in the nursing directorate providing senior leadership within the CNO Policy and Strategy Unit.

As Senior Nurse - Professional Strategies, the post holder will support the Deputy Chief Nurse (Policy and Strategy) in driving forwards national policy, strategy and professional priorities relevant to the Nursing Directorate and wider nursing profession priorities.

Through these key strategic programmes of work we will accelerate the contribution of nursing to ensuring the NHS can meet its financial, people resource and sustainability as well as ensuring the continued delivery of high quality, safe and effective services through new innovative ways of working.

With a focus upon ensuring expert professional advice is available, the post holder alongside the wider PSU team will ensure the voice of nursing is central to all Policy and Strategy decisions.

As well as maintaining and supporting nursing influence and impact within health care strategy and policy environments, this role will work closely with our key ALB partners and professional bodies across the health and care system.

The post holder will hold a core role in ensuring close collaborative working with key internal and external partners ensuring evidence-based approaches which support and enable high quality nursing practice are routinely applied both in policy and strategy development and implementation.

Main duties of the job

The role will ensure the directorate and nursing voice is central to this through:

  • Providing clinical and professional advice and leadership - to support and inform an evidence-based approach for policy and strategy development and implementation across a range of sectors and systems.
  • Supporting delivery of specific strategic professional programmes to support delivery of the CNO vision for the profession.
  • Supporting in the effective influencing of strategic approaches, strategy and policy across NHSE ensuring the nursing voice is appropriately reflected within decision-making and provides value and insight into NHSE policy.
  • Operating as a senior nurse lead within the organisation, managing, nurturing and actively maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Leading key projects which support acceleration of the CNO Excellence programme ensuring these have strong foundations within policy and research and support the CNO's Strategic vision for the professions.
  • Championing evidence-based change management, continuous improvement processes innovation and research within all PSU activities.
  • Contributing to programmes of work which build capability and capacity of the profession within policy and strategy, ensuring effective resources and support area available to nursing teams across health and care.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

  • Educated to masters level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area
