Job summary

The South West Clinical Senate is looking to appoint a Senate Support Officer to fill a vacancy which will become available on 02 September 2024. The post is offered on a permanent full time (1WTE) basis.

Established in 2013, the South West Clinical Senate is responsible for providing independent clinical advice to commissioners on all aspects of clinical care and especially on complex pathways delivered across multiple health and social care communities. Following the abolition of the National Clinical Assessment Team (NCAT) in 2014, it now also assumes an important role in providing early clinical input and formal assurance of the clinical components of significant service reconfiguration proposed by Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships prior to public consultation.

We have a strong Senate Council of circa 50 clinical members and secured engagement from over 100 clinicians across the region through our Assembly as well as a Citizens' Assembly of national repute. This is an exciting opportunity with real involvement in improving experience and outcomes for patients.

Main duties of the job

As Senate Support Officer, you will be part of a small team managing the Clinical Senate Office. Your role involves advancing the Clinical Senate's work as an independent clinical advisory body. This includes supporting commissioners and clinicians across the SW region by developing clinical advice on various strategic healthcare topics and organizing clinical reviews of large-scale service changes before public consultations.

You will need strong organizational and communication skills, along with a good understanding of the healthcare landscape in the SW and knowledge of national healthcare policies and guidance. Working with the Head of Senate and Senate Chair, you will have the opportunity to build strong networks and collaborate with Systems and clinical leaders across the SW to provide independent clinical advice.

Your role will focus on supporting the Senate Manager in delivering the Senate's portfolio of independent clinical advice and developing and promoting the Clinical Senate. This involves ensuring that the Senate work programme is effectively planned and managed.

As a Senate Support Officer, you will lead the successful delivery of workstreams. This includes responsibility for the Citizens Assembly, ensuring the patient voice is included in Senate deliberations, leading on website development and communications, including the annual conference.

Proficiency in MS Office packages is required.
