NHS England

Senior Medicines Policy Manager

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

Did you know that over half of all of UK adults take at least one prescribed medicine? What's more, between 5-10% of all hospital admissions are medicines related and two-thirds of these admissions are preventable? Or that between 30-50% of the medicines prescribed for long-term conditions are not being taken as intended? Alongside concerns around adherence, the prescribing bill in the NHS is rising, at a time where the NHS needs to maximise the financial resources available.

If you enjoy working policy projects that have a tangible human impact, then we might have the job for you.

An opportunity has arisen to join NHS England's Medicines Optimisation Policy Team, part of the Medicines Value & Access Directorate, to help shape NHS England's optimisation and uptake strategy.

In 2023, NHS England published 16 national medicines optimisation opportunities, to drive medicines optimisation across Integrated Care Systems. This role will play a key part in bringing those opportunities to life, improving equitable uptake across the NHS, and ensuring the use of best value medicines

The postholder will be based at one of our offices in London, Leeds or Runcorn. Some travel to other offices and site visits will be required on an infrequent basis.

Main duties of the job

As a senior Medicine Policy Manager, you'll work as part of cross directorate project teams of policy makers, clinicians, and supply experts to deliver the medicines optimisation agenda.

Key aspects of the role will be to:

  • Through co-production, develop and oversee the delivery of priority medicines policy projects.
  • Direct responsibility for the project management of 2-3 critical policy projects and supporting the Deputy Director with the effective management of our medicines optimisation programme.
  • Engaging with commissioners, providers, and clinicians across the NHS to develop policy positions, ensure a whole system approach to medicines optimisation, and drive measurable change.
  • Developing policy options that can drive a step change in uptake of best value biologic medicines.
  • Ability to rapidly develop briefings and oversee FoI and PQ responses on policy issues within tight timelines.
  • Supporting more junior members of the team in their professional development through coaching and demonstrated leadership.
