Job summary
The Specialist Education Advisor (SEA) will work with and advise the Medical Director responsible for the Medical Expansion and Reform programme, and senior WT&E delivery leads, to provide clinical and professional educator leadership and operational support to this priority programme. The Medical Expansion and Reform programme is focused on delivery of the NHS Long-Term Workforce Plan objectives to expand undergraduate medical training places up to 15,000 by 2032 and implement reform to the medical education system such as the 4-year undergraduate degree and the Medical Doctor Degree Apprenticeship. This role is key to providing clinical expertise, advise and leadership in the development of policy, strategy and frameworks to support the delivery of these reforms.

Main duties of the job
The role's purpose is to lead key workstreams such as medical school places expansion, medical education reform, including the 4-year undergraduate degree, and the Medical Doctor Degree Apprenticeship. Each of these workstreams has key milestones and deliverables identified and the post holder will be responsible for working with NHSE teams and external partners to ensure effective delivery with management of stakeholder relationships and risks being a key part of this role. This role will provide clinical expertise, advise and leadership in the development of policy, strategy and frameworks to support the delivery of these reforms.
Key deliverables include:
- Successful commencement of Medical Doctor Degree Apprenticeship pilots in 2024 and 2025, and development of longer-term approach
- Development of a 4-year undergraduate degree and mobilisation of HEI sector to deliver shortened course by 2026
- Rapid policy development of the approach to internships to move to delivery phase
- Partnership work with government agencies and sector to deliver medical school expansion in alignment with Long Term Workforce Plan trajectories
- Supporting medical schools to utilise APEL to deliver shorter medical degree courses to support medical school expansion
