Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Healthcare Public Health team as a Consultant in Healthcare Public Health for a fixed term of up to 10 months, until the end of December 2024 to cover maternity leave. You will provide public health leadership, advice and support to internal and external stakeholders relevant to the function and you will play a critical role in delivering the Healthcare Public Health Directorate business plan.

Main duties of the job

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring that NHSE delivers on it's legal commitments to reduce healthcare inequalities. You will provide leadership to systems on Healthcare Public Health, including the NHSE Inequalities Improvement Programme and the five strategic priorities, such as elective recovery. You will act as a conduit between the national team and systems, ensuring oversight and assurance. You will work within and between the regions to convene examples of good practice and learning to drive quality and improvement in population health outcomes. You will provide public health input and support to a range of clinical areas and pathways, for example cancer

The Consultant in Healthcare Public Health will be part of the Senior Leadership Team within the Healthcare Public Health Directorate.

The postholder will provide public health leadership, advice and support to multiple internal and external stakeholders. The postholder will play a critical role in delivering the Healthcare Public Health Directorate business plan.

The postholder will oversee, coordinate and deliver high quality professional public health input, support and advice to NHS England at regional and system level to drive improvements in outcomes and reduction in health inequalities across the population in a way that is cost effective and prioritises prevention

Essential

  • Inclusion in the GMC Full and Specialist Register with a license to practice/GDC Specialist List (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview) Or Inclusion in the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists
  • MFPH by examination, by exemption or by assessment, or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • In depth additional expert knowledge acquired over a significant period in the following area(s) -epidemiology and statistics -public health practice -health promotion -health economics -health care evaluation. Knowledge of methods of developing clinical quality assurance, quality improvement and evidence based clinical and/or public health practice
  • Proven and significant leadership experience and/or formal management qualification

  • Highly developed communication skills with the ability to communicate on highly complex matters and difficult situations
  • Leadership, vision, strategic thinking and planning with highly developed political skills
