Job summary

The Head of Contract Management will be a senior leader within the NHS England commercial team, responsible for the management of a portfolio of contracts in the Professional and Corporate Services Category.

The role requires the active management of many high-profile contracts critical to the delivery of NHS England's objectives. It requires engaging with senior stakeholders across the organisation to ensure contracts can meet needs in a dynamic delivery environment; working with a range of suppliers to ensure value for money and cultivate relationships; the leadership and development of a talented and passionate team; coordinating across external parties within the health family and broader government; and ensuring compliance with best practice and government standards.

You will work closely with the Head of Procurement within the category, ensuring seamless transition from acquisition to management of services. As a key deputy to the Associate Director of Commercial overseeing the category, you will be comfortable interfacing into senior leaders within the function and the wider organisation. As well as being responsible for contracts within the category, you will drive forward standards and best practices across the contract management community in the function, working with peers in other categories to drive continuous improvement.

Main duties of the job

The role sits within the Commercial Delivery and Governance team which has responsibility for the effective management of all third party spend within the organisation. As such the role requires proactive and experienced leadership to balance risks, ensure continuity of supply and develop relationships with suppliers to maximise value for the NHS.

  • Leads the contract management team on the direction and delivery of the contract management strategy.
  • Oversees and sets the overall contract management strategy for their category.
  • Ensures sufficient resource is deployed to manage complex contracts effectively and addresses problematic projects to turn the situation around.
  • Manages dispute resolution between strategic suppliers and the NHS.
  • Actively reconsiders market approach over time to consider new or innovative commercial models.
  • Oversees and sets the overall tone of the directorate's relationship with suppliers.
  • Supports and drives the use of structured approaches to supplier relationship management across the NHS.
  • Identifies failing projects and is able to persuade other leaders and politicians when these need to be stopped.
  • Oversees exit and transition management across the directorate's commercial delivery and pays particular attention to the most strategically important contracts.

Salary Progression Applicants will commence at the bottom of Band 8d with a full-time starting salary of £83,571 with a pay step increase after 5 years service. For posts based in Inner London, the above salaries will include the additional supplement of 20% of basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £5,132 per annum and a maximum payment of £7,746 per annum. This is offered in accordance with NHS Terms and Conditions and is based on office location.
