Job summary

NHS England is now recruiting for the new cohort of multidisciplinary National Clinical Directors (NCDs) and National Specialty Advisors (NSAs). Our NCDs and NSAs are a group of senior practising clinicians from a range of clinical backgrounds who provide overarching national clinical leadership to the organisation to support our programmes and priorities in addition to their clinical practice in the NHS. They have extensive knowledge of their specialty areas, current experience in frontline NHS services, and can provide agile and responsive advice to sense check local and national initiatives.

The NCD will provideoverarching specialist clinical leadership and advice for NHS England in these respects:

  • Clinical advice and leadership to drive transformation of services for patients through corporate programmes and Long-Term Plan workstreams;
  • Clinical advice and leadership to support the commissioning of services. The NCD may, where appropriate, be responsible for chairing the relevant specialised commissioning programme of care board.
  • Clinical advice to support development of policy and parliamentary accountability.

Main duties of the job

The NCD plays a crucial role in promoting effective coordination and collaboration with other clinical leads within the organisation. This includes working closely with the GIRFT chair, GIRFT clinical leads, CRG chairs, WTE leads, and NHS Impact programmes to ensure that all their specialty areas are aligned with national policy and strategy.

About us

The NCD for End of Life Care will be responsible for the provision of high quality clinical leadership and advice to drive:

  • Taking forward the End of Life Care ambitions set out within the Long Term Plan
  • Setting strategic objectives and providing leadership for the national 'Palliative & EoLC clinical network'
  • Co-chairing the 'Palliative & EoLC Ambitions Partnership', influencing the work of national statutory and voluntary organisation
  • Driving the implementation of the 'Ambitions for Palliative & End of Life Care'
  • Promoting the adoption of the universal model for personalised care for people identified as being within the last year of life.
  • Providing clinical leadership to reduce variation in the provision and experience of EoLC

The NCD will also provide clinical leadership for agreed project deliverables to support improvement for EoLC including:

  • implementation of the digital strategy,
  • clinical outcome metrics,
  • community care models

The post holder will be expected to work closely with policy teams and ensure work aligns with NHS England policy and priorities.

NCDs will also contribute to definition of the outcome measures by which clinicians and patients recognise services should be judged.

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant medical/ scientific/nursing and midwifery/ allied health/pharmacy/dental discipline

Desirable

  • Holds or is willing to work towards Fellowship or Associate Fellowship of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.

Knowledge

  • Experienced clinical practitioner with credibility and the ability to command the respect of all clinical and non-clinical professionals across primary, secondary and community care

Desirable

  • Knowledge of evidence-based policy making and corporate DHSC and NHS governance
