Job summary

NHS Resolution is a not-for-profit part of the NHS working for health care providers to resolve claims fairly and to share learning across the NHS and beyond. We provide a supportive environment for our staff with specialist training and the opportunity for personal development.

NHS Resolution has put Insight at the heart of its strategy which has led to a transformation of the Business Intelligence team over the last few years.

We are currently transitioning into the cloud, with a brand-new data platform being built in Azure. This makes it a particularly exciting time to be part of the Business Intelligence team.

As a Database Administrator you will take responsibility for ensuring our on-premise SQL Server environment is in the best state possible for day-to-day use, and to get it ready for migration. You will also contribute to the design and delivery of a best-in-class Azure data platform.

You will support your colleagues in BI with this transition, and in return we will provide you with the time and resources to develop your knowledge of the Azure platform, encouraging you to gain the Microsoft certification that will support your career development.

This is a 12-month fixed-term role with a clear focus on helping NHS Resolution realise our cloud-based goals, whilst simultaneously delivering the high-quality insight that is key to success.

Main duties of the job

As a Database Administrator in the BI team, you will collaborate with colleagues in BI and Technology & Operations to help maintain the integrity of our on-premises SQL Server environment. You will take responsibility for database tuning, maintaining indexes, managing the way queries are handled, monitoring database performance, and solving various issues.

You will also play a key role in the evolution of our data landscape as we move to a cloud-based data platform in Azure, taking advantage of the training and support provided to develop your skills in this area.

SQL Server Management Studio, Visual Studio, Jira and Azure DevOps will be vital tools in your day-to-day life as an NHSR DBA, as will adopting an agile methodology and collaborating with a CI/CD process that helps BI maintain a fast-moving and accurate development environment.

Your relationship with Technology & Operations will also be key to success, supporting their Architecture & Engineering team as they develop the security, patching and backup processes that are key to a smooth-running database, and liaising with them as we design and build the Azure environment together.

Please see the attached Job description and Person specification for more information.
