Job summary
A rare opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and experienced Neonatologist to join NHS Resolutions Early Notification (EN) team as a National Neonatal Clinical Fellow on a fixed-term basis for one year (secondments will also be considered). This role will also involve travel across England. The role is advertised for the successful candidate to start as soon as possible in 2023 (clinical approval permitting), if this is not possible, then a start date in early 2024 would also be considered.
In April 2017, NHS Resolution launched the EN scheme, since then, all maternity services have been required to notify NHS Resolution of incidents where there is the potential for long-term severe brain injury. The aims of the scheme are:
- Investigate potential eligibility for compensation and take proactive action to reduce legal costs and improve the experience for the family and affected staff;
- Share learning rapidly with the individual trust and the wider system in order to support safety improvement and prevent the same things happening again.
- Improve the process for obtaining compensation for families, meeting needs in real time where possible and trying to reduce the risk of claims increasing in value due to inflation or unmet needs (such as psychological support) translating into larger losses.
Main duties of the job
This is a unique opportunity to work at a national level
and contribute to improving outcomes in maternity and neonatal care. A large
proportion of the role will involve reviewing case files and providing feedback
on how we can best learn from claims to prevent future harm.
Additional responsibilities include the opportunity to
lead on a project within the organisation, represent NHS Resolution at external
meetings with key stakeholders in maternity and neonatal care, discuss the EN
scheme with parents, lead on the triage of cases reported into the scheme and work
with the EN family liaison and mediation lead and wider team to support the
development of the scheme.
