Job summary

The post holder will provide a reassuring visible presence with a caring and sensitive approach. Will protect, advise, investigate and act in an endeavour to create and maintain a safe and crime free environment at all times. Security staff will be compassionate, courteous and patient, acting without fear, favour or prejudice to the rights of others.

You will deliver a holistic multi skilled service, including manned guarding, patrolling, key management, incident and alarm response, reception and concierge service all the time protecting guests, visitors, staff to the Pears Institute and its contents.

Main duties of the job

- To respond immediately in Pears Institute for all calls for security assistance- To respond to intruder alarms, inspect for signs of break-in, search for suspects, and liaise with the Police as appropriate- Security Officers will provide information on their activity, i.e. number of patrols, lost keys etc, to the Team Leader to support the provision of performance data to the Buliding Manager.- Ensure compliance with all areas of statutory requirements, including Data Protection Act.- To prevent unauthorised persons gaining access to the premises. In situations where this does not occur to bring about the eviction from the site as quickly and unobtrusively as possible.- To check that external doors and lower floor windows are secure particularly in relation to areas of the site, which do not operate outside normal working hours.- Provide a visible presence at main reception, undertaking main reception duties as and when required

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Operational Duties To respond immediately in Pears Institute for all calls for security assistance involving;(i) those in fear of physical harm(ii) scenes of actual or suspected crime where personal injury is involved(iii) crime in progress(iv) fire alarms To respond to all other calls for assistance in order of priority. To strive to reduce fear of crime that may be held by guests, staff or visitors and to this end all Security Officers will visit all areas of the Pears Institute via Patrol, making their presence known. When an arrestable offence, such as theft, criminal damage or assault, has taken place on RFLPS premises, Security Officers will alert the Police, and detain any person:(i) who is committing, or with reasonable cause is suspected to be in the act of committing such an offence; or(ii) who with reasonable cause is suspected of having committed such an offence, if one has actually been committed. To respond to intruder alarms, inspect for signs of break-in, search for suspects, and liaise with the Police as appropriate. To question and establish the bona fides of persons found unescorted in non public areas that are not displaying a Pears Institue Photo ID badge. Proactively enforce the Pears Insitute No Smoking Policy Ensure the provision of a 24 hour security service and that Security Officers work against their job description and issued guidance. To increase and enhance a visible security presence on site and create a more secure environment/perception for all staff, guests and visitors there will be a requirement to work from the main reception.

2. Administrative Responsibilities Contribute to the preparation (and collation where appropriate) of weekly and monthly data collection to ensure the timely and accurate preparation of the security teams reporting mechanism.

Familiarising and complying with the entire contents of the security Assignment Instructions and ensuring every relevant aspect is complied with and where it is known or believed these have not been complied with, then advise the relevant manager or where appropriate invoke the RFLPS ;whistle blowing process. Security Officers will provide information on their activity, i.e. number of patrols, lost keys etc, to the Team Leader to support the provision of performance data to the Buliding Manager. Under the direction of the Team Leader, contribute to the preparation of weekly and monthly data collection to ensure the timely and accurate preparation of the security teams reporting mechanism

3. Performance, Risk and Incident Reporting To patrol and identify all Fire hazards and report on them. To report any obstruction of corridors or fire escapes to the person in charge of that area and also to the Fire safety advisor / Team Leader. To ensure that Fire fighting equipment is in place and not obstructed. Unserviceable equipment should be reported to the Fire safety advisor / Team Leader. To raise the alarm and call the Fire Brigade when fire is discovered or reported. During Major Incidents Security Officers will, where appropriate restrict access to the site; regulate the movement of traffic and pedestrians. Liaise with the Police, Fire Brigade and other emergency services. Assist in the search of buildings, and any other matter involving the preservation of life and prevention of danger, as per the RFLPS Major Incident Policy. To ensure all incidents are investigated, reported and logged. All crimes reported to, or discovered by, the Security Service will be investigated by them and the Metropolitan Police. To ensure that any interference to perimeter / ground floor protection is located as soon as possible and reported upon. To initially investigate the surrounding circumstances to any suspect packages, which are discovered abandoned or placed within the complex and take appropriate action as per RFLPS Policy. Undertaking appropriate risk assessments to proactively identify areas of non- compliance and risk and take action as appropriate

4. Continuous Improvement and Innovation

(Pro-actively and respond to) ways in which services can be improved and participate at the appropriate level in the facilities management teams. Participate, where appropriate, in weekly meetings to resolve recurrent service failures To ensure that the policies and procedures of the RFLPS which affect the security and safety of its guests, employees and property are carried out.

5. Quality Standards and Monitoring Ensure compliance with all areas of statutory requirements, including Data Protection Act. To exercise constant vigilance to detect any potential hazard likely to endanger guests, visitors or staff. To deal appropriately with such hazards by diverting people from the location and reporting the incident to whichever department / emergency service is responsible for dealing with the problem. To be alert at all times to spillages, discarded rubbish, clinical waste, broken glass, graffiti or any other matter that may have an impact upon the image and state of the Pears Insitute and grounds as seen by the staff and the general public. To report such matters to the helpdesk or appropriate manager able to rectify the situation. Security Officers will be required to use CCTV surveillance cameras that are located in various areas across the Pears Insitute in conjunction with routine and strategic patrols, and ensure that all CCTV equipment is kept in good working order, as directed by the RFLPSs CCTV Policy.

6. Communication To provide a support to persons, who have been a victim of crime, keeping them informed of any developments in the investigation by Police or the Security Service. To receive reports of lost property and accept found personal property for safekeeping. To bring to the attention of the Team Leader of all valuable property and cash immediately, and arrange for its safekeeping. To maintain the register of lost and found property and to take active steps to trace the owners and restore their property, as per the RFLPS Lost Property Procedure. Use approach of who, when, how, when dealing with incidents All reports to have accurate content and to be written with good grammar in order to be understood at all levels. Verbal communication to be courteous and fair at all times Dealing with issues and escalation

7. General and administration Consistently exhibits and encourage in others a customer and guest focussed approach which ensures the RFLPS team is viewed positively as being a distinct service partner within the Pears Insitute and actively pursues and encourages achieving service excellence through role modelling customer care and quality initiatives. To manage all emergencies outside normal hours, liaising with a Senior Manager or the Building Manager (including call out arrangements etc) .

To use initiative, following the principles of security best practice, in dealing with situations where no specific instructions have been issued, which apply to it, ensuring that discretion and professionalism are maintained to ensure that the situation is dealt with satisfactorily. To ensure that all keys / access control cards that are held in the Security Office are kept safe at all times, and that they are only issued on production of a valid Pears Institute Photo ID card. The issue / receipt of all keys/ access cards must be logged on the RFLPS Key Control Register. All reports of lost or missing keys / access cards must be reported immediately to the Team Leader.

8. Patient and visitor focussed responsibilities

Actively embrace and attend training and feedback activities relating to all aspects of the Pears Institute customer and guest care programme. When on duty in the Security Office, to courteously receive all persons visiting the Pears Insiture and direct / assist them accordingly. To provide assistance, support and advice to callers on the telephone.Security Officers will be appropriately trained in calming and defusing situations of conflict, and must not be seen as being aggressive, provocative or to inflame situations of violence and aggression. In exceptional circumstances, when it is necessary to prevent serious harm to persons, Security Officers may need to exercise the minimum of reasonable force to avoid injury to others.
