Job summary

The Medical Equipment Library (MEL) Assistant is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Medical EquipmentLibrary service, working autonomously to carry out routine maintenance of medical equipment as well as collecting,decontaminating and delivering high priority medical devices to clinical areas, ensuring maximum utilisation of medicaldevices across the organisation. The post holder is required to work with clinical and technical staff from within theorganisation, as well as external staff, to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of services in line with clinical requirements,ensuring high quality and positive outcomes are achieved for service users.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for ongoing management of medical device loans and stock levels, ensuring that overdue loans are returned to the MEL in a timely manner to ensure devices are utilised effectively. This may include challenging clinical staff andhaving difficult conversations, where excellent interpersonal skills are essential.

Day to day organisation of the MEL to ensure safe and effective standard of service is provided.

Undertake device collections and deliveries for wards and clinical areas. Manage high pressure situations to supply keymedical devices in a timely manner, whilst managing conflicting priorities of clinical staff.

Remove medical devices from clinical use and liaise with Medical Engineering staff if failures occur and analysis showsremedial work is beyond the scope of the MEL Assistant.

Liaise with Medical Engineering staff to ensure that planned maintenance is carried out as appropriate.

Provision of excellent customer service to all staff who visit or contact the MEL.

Responsible for carrying out routine maintenance of selected equipment.

Monitor contamination status of devices returned from loan and take appropriate action when required, includingescalation to management and/or Infection Control.

Regular communication with clinical staff who request and return medical devices. Maintaining good workingrelationships is essential.
