Job summary

The Estates Mechanical Supervisor is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the site wide Mechanical infrastructure and associated connected equipment, including some Electrical and Building systems, to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and guidance. They must be able to work and act on his/her own initiative and possess the ability to communicate effectively, in a pleasant manner, with all other members of staff within QEF, as well as users of QEFs contracted sites

A high level of technical ability/competence is required to oversee the skilled workforce and to be able to provide the first line of technical support to all trades. The individual must be fully aware of their Health and Safety responsibilities, ensuring that all maintenance work and alterations are carried out in a safe manner in order to avoid any danger to the direct and indirect labour force and users of QEFs contracted sites whilst undertaking the work.

The role covers the management of QEF's direct and indirect maintenance staff, undertaking both maintenance (via the defect reporting procedure) and small works to all of QEF's contracted properties, ensuring that all work is carried out in compliance with safety standards and national legislation.

The Estates Supervisor must also be willing to undertake such training as may be required, to support their technical/managerial development.

Main duties of the job

  • Cost effective and efficient operation of all plant, services and equipment within his control, including the planning, monitoring and co-ordination of engineering maintenance programmes within the estates unit.
  • Deputise for other Estates Officers as required.
  • Manage contractors, temporary technical and trade staff within the department as required.
  • Manage engineering maintenance on a day to day basis, including dealing with operational incidents as and when they arise, effectively diagnosing engineering faults and initiating repairs.
  • Contract administration including preparation of documents in compliance with Trust policies and procedures.
  • Manage, plan, organise and implement the programme of engineering maintenance, taking into account the operational requirements of the site.
  • Liaise with the wider Estates Management team to prepare engineering maintenance and plant replacement programmes on an annual basis.
  • Manage and carry out Minor New Works as requested by customer, to the benefit of the wards and departments.
  • Manage direct labour engineering operatives, including dealing with all personnel issues i.e. attendance at work, recruitment, grievance and disciplinary issues.

Our services include: estates, facilities services, procurement, medical engineering and devices, endoscopy decontamination and sterile services, transport, out-patient pharmacy, and prevention & management of violence & aggression training (PMVA).

In addition we provide consultancy services, advising clients on all aspects of establishing a subsidiary company within an NHS body to the provision of VAT compliance advice.

  • A sound understanding of the mechanical systems & infrastructures found in a hospital environment, along with the required maintenance and upkeep of the infrastructure and associated connected equipment
  • The ability to organise and utilise direct labour force cost-effectively and efficiently
  • Display a good knowledge of health and safety legislation and appreciation of potential hazards that could occur during the carrying out of maintenance work
  • Control the issue of, and maintain, stock levels of materials.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of attendance, sickness, and hours worked, etc.

Desirable

  • An excellent appreciation of all trades connected with both electrical engineering and building services.
  • The co-ordination of all building and engineering trades during the construction process

Experience

  • Must have a minimum of four years' experience in a hospital or similar environment
  • Must have completed an appropriate Engineering Apprenticeship
  • Must have undertaken supervision of maintenance work in the past.

Desirable

  • Sound knowledge of mechanical engineering services and a good knowledge of electrical and building systems found within a hospital environment

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND or equivalent
