Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Biomedical Scientist to join our dedicated team on a part-time basis (18.75 hours per week). This is an excellent opportunity for those seeking a better work-life balance while continuing to play an essential role in delivering high-quality diagnostic services.

The role is open to Band 6 or highly experienced Band 5 Biomedical Scientists currently undertaking a Specialist Portfolio as Annex 21, offering a chance to further develop skills and progress within a supportive and forward-thinking laboratory.

Working as part of the core rotational pattern, you will contribute to the delivery of our comprehensive Haematology and Blood Transfusion service. The part-time working pattern includes one Sunday every six weeks and participation in core and late shifts as part of the rotation. You should bring solid experience in both disciplines and a commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards.

You should have a sound academic understanding of Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratory practice, with the ability to identify clinically significant features on blood films to support accurate interpretation and efficient turnaround of results for our patients.

Main duties of the job

  • Collaborate effectively within the department to deliver a professional clinical laboratoryservice.
  • Perform core scientific and interpretive work in line with the qualifications of a Registered Healthcare Scientist.
  • Participate in appropriate training courses and continuous professional development (CPD) programs.
  • Supervise unqualified staff and deputise for section leaders as needed.
  • Provide specialist clinical technical services, including involvement in research and auditactivities.
  • Delivery of comprehensive diagnostic services while maintaining high standards of safetyand quality.

NWLP Induction

The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles). All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.

Essential

  • Biomedical Science degree or equivalent which is acceptable by the IBMS /HPC for registration
  • HCPC Registration.
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma or demonstrate the equivalent depth and breadth of knowledge in the relevant discipline evidenced by competency documents or equivalent
  • Actively involved in Continuing Professional Development.

SKILLS/ABILITIES

Essential

  • Good practical analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory work
  • Able to provide judgment on a range of complex problems
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office or similar
  • Ability to show flexibility by performing multiple tasks

Desirable

  • Customer Service experience

  • A good working knowledge of specialist subject in relevant discipline
  • Use of Pathology computer systems

  • Previous experience in a large busy laboratory
