Job summary

North West London Pathology have an exciting and rare opportunity for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist who has extensive experience working in Special Haematology and managing staff, to oversee the management and operation of the Special haematology service. The service is centralised at St Mary's Hospital, and this role will be the service lead and subject matter expert for this specialism.

NWLP covers the most complex trusts in the UK serving a large and diverse population. NWLP provides academically led acute and specialist services, to people from the local area, from throughout the United Kingdom and overseas.

The successful candidate will be working closely with the Blood Sciences Site Manager and the clinical lead for the red cell service. The red cell clinic at Hammersmith Hospital is world famous for investigations of haemolytic anaemias and receives referral patients from all over the country. The Lead Scientist will work closely with the antenatal councilors from our five sites that provide maternity services, as well as the Antenatal & Newborn Screening Commissioners from NHS.

The department process over 45,000 haemoglobin electrophoresis samples per year. In addition, there are over 1,000 adult registered sickle cell patients from London North West and St Mary's has 150 registered paediatric sickle cell patients. The department runs a 24/7 service for haemoglobin S levels which all registered staff on site are trained to process.

Main duties of the job

  • As the post holder, you will be responsible for dealing with highly complex cases and reporting to the divisional management team issues that affect the service.
  • Ensure antenatal teams are informed of any abnormal results on a daily basis.
  • Prepare the red cell laboratory meeting for interesting cases with the consultants and other personnel, both internal and external.
  • Complete the annual audits for NHS, and participate in the Blood Sciences Duty Manager roster, being available for telephone advice or personal assistance when problems outside normal working hours affect any of our Blood Sciences services.

NWLP Induction

The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles). All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.
