Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Associate Practitioner/ Genetic Technologist to join the Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy diagnostic service (SIHMDS) Laboratory within North West London Pathology at Hammersmith Hospital, hosted by Imperial NHS Trust.

The laboratory is one of the partner organisations within the North Thames Genomic Laboratory Hub (NTGLH) and is accredited with the NSHCS to provide STP and HSST training, together with a commitment to train and develop staff of all grades.

Applicants must have a biological science degree, with practical laboratory experience in genetics and be able to demonstrate a keen interest in service development and laboratory diagnostic genetics.Applicants should have worked in an accredited NHS diagnostic laboratory or equivalent workplace.

This role is primarily based in the molecular section of SIHMDS and demonstrable genomic knowledge and experience for this post is essential. The successful applicant will be required to perform laboratory assays, with experience of RT-qPCR, fragment analysis and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) being desirable but full training will be provided.

The role demands a high level of organisation in order to successfully manage the operational delivery of the technical workload. The successful candidate must demonstrate evidence of working with a focus on excellence and continuous service improvement, as well as displaying a high level of technical skill.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide technical support for the laboratory under the direction of senior scientific staff.
  • Follow documented laboratory procedures to ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality servicedelivery to patients.
  • Perform genetic analyses for patients referred with a wide range of genetic disorders,ensuring turnaround time targets are met.
  • Process samples in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Conduct first-line analysis and interpretation of test results, and generate reports prior toscientific staff authorisation.
  • Support research and development projects as required.
  • Participate in rotational work to gain experience across all techniques used within the section.
  • Carry out technical developments in collaboration with scientific staff to support theintroduction of new techniques.
  • Organise and prioritise personal workload in discussion with senior genetic technologists/scientists to ensure efficient service delivery.
  • Maintain a high level of professional competence in all tests and investigations performed.
  • Prepare, maintain, and document accurate records of reagents and consumables; ensure theirefficient and safe use.
  • Maintain cleanliness and perform routine maintenance of equipment within the assignedworking area as required.
  • Participate in quality assurance procedures, including equipment maintenance records, dataquality checks, and corrective actions.

NWLP Induction

The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles). All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.
