Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our friendly, professional and very busy waste management delivery service team based at South Tyneside District Hospital, South Shields.

Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills and be educated to ILM level 3 or similar

The role includes;

To support the waste management team to achieve legal compliance with all waste, environmental and sustainability matters at a level appropriate to role.

Supporting the Environmental Waste & Porter Manager and be responsible for assisting with the management of the day to day operational aspects of the waste porters role, ensuring the effective delivery of a seamless and customer focused waste management service.

Ensuring all staff adhere to waste management Trust policies, procedures, Standard Operational Procedures (SOP) and Risk Assessments (RA)

Ensuring that the waste porters attend their Statutory & Mandatory training and carry out their appraisals, sickness management and general administrative duties

Support in the development and review of departmental SOPs, RAs, Competencies etc. as detailed in the accompanying Job Description

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the role include:

The role involves dealing with the day to day supervision, guidance and support of the waste porter team in all areas of waste management

Provide comprehensive support and guidance to all staff in relation to all Waste, Environmental & Sustainability matters

Core hours of work are between 08:30 to 17:00hrs Monday to Friday, although occasional weekend and early starts / later finishes may be required in extreme circumstances

This is a busy and critical team and we are seeking someone who has the ability to use their own initiative, work independently or as a team player whilst demonstrating a calm and professional disposition.

Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills and have a good knowledge of using a computer and associated software (Microsoft Office suite)

Essential

  • Regular local travel for meetings and waste audits
  • Occasional travel nationally for meetings and duty of care/ pre-acceptance audits
  • Occasional Moving and Handling tasks

Qualifications

Essential

  • ILM level 3 in leadership or equivalent
  • Clean, current driving licence

Desirable

  • IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management or similar, or
  • WAMITAB - Level 3 Certificate in Principles of Sustainable Resource Management or similar, or
  • Level 3 Diploma for waste supervisor or similar

Experience

Essential

  • Ability to manage staff incl. their workload, activities and performance on a day to day basis, to ensure that a high standard customer focused waste collection service is delivered
  • Ability to develop and provide monthly reports to ensure the Environmental Waste and Porter Manager is informed of all system failures or non-compliance issues

  • Previous experience of working within the NHS
