Job summary

We are seeking six enthusiastic individuals to join the Portering team at South Tyneside District Hospital, South Shields, working 40 hours per week. The post holders must be flexible in order to meet the needs of the service and will be required to work a variety of shifts, for example:-0600 -1400, 1400-2200, 2200 0600, and 0900 1700. The service operates 24 hrs a day over 365 days per year however a flexible approach to these roles will be applied, such as multiple 15 or 20 hour contracts to meet the hours required for the six posts.

Set working rosters are not an option as the post holders will be allocated shifts in order to meet the needs and demands of the service. Porters will be issued with their rosters 4 weeks in advance, however, there maybe occasions when changes are made to rosters at short notice due to unforeseen circumstances i.e. sickness.

There may also be an opportunity to work additional hours due to sickness or unforeseen circumstances.

Applicants must hold or have

  • Class C Driving license
  • Basic Numeracy and Literacy skills (desirable qualification i.e.-Literacy Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE Grade C), Numeracy Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE Grade C)
  • Basic I.T. skills and the ability to use IT systems confidently
  • Be physically fit in order to carry out all physical requirements throughout the shift

Main duties of the job

Post holders will undertake all Portering duties, as defined within the job description with the aim being to provide an efficient and effective service to patients and staff in order to ensure high standards are met and in accordance with Health and Safety legislation across the various Trust premises, whilst treating everyone with dignity, respect and recognising individual differences.

Successful candidates must possess a high level of communication skills and be effective team players with the ability to work with all disciplines of staff and members of the public. We require staff who have a high level of interpersonal and customer service skills and a caring and compassionate nature and who place a strong emphasis on putting the patient first. Portering experience is desirable, but not essential and full on the job training will be given.

It is important that the post holder acts as a positive role model to peers in order to promote a professional and well-bonded workforce adhering to and promoting the Behavioural Compact and core values.
