The NHS in Wales is offering 2 salaried post-graduate training programmes in Clinical Scientific Computing for high-calibre science graduates who are passionate about science and its role in patient care.

The Trainee Clinical Scientist will be employed by the host organisation for a fixed term of three years. During this time, they will work through a work-based programme of learning.

The academic program will be delivered at Newcastle and Manchester. The first part of the programme will introduce the basic science and theoretical background of the rotational disciplines and their application in clinical science within health, as well as providing an introduction to healthcare services and values. The master's degree includes a research project within year 2/3.

Main duties of the job

Hywel Dda University Health Board, TriTech Institute (Clinical Physiology)

  • The post in Hywel Dda is supported by clinical physiology, TriTech institute and innovations, and digital services. The successful applicant will learn how clinical scientific computing supports patients on cardiac and respiratory pathways; helping to develop innovative solutions to improve the delivery of diagnostics and interventions. TriTech institute and innovations offers opportunities in research, development and evaluation of health and wellbeing innovations.
Swansea Bay University Health Board, Morriston Hospital (Rehabilitation Engineering)
  • The post in Swansea Bay at the Rehabilitation Engineering Unit (REU), located in the purpose-built Specialist Rehabilitation Centre at Morriston Hospital. The multi-disciplinary team assess, design and manufacture medical devices, providing engineering solutions to improve the function, mobility and quality of life of people with complex disabilities. Successful applicants will support the department in its service development, innovation and research activities, including links with Swansea University. The successful trainee placed in REU will develop connections across the Health Board, and work with some of the 120 therapists, scientists, and technicians within Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering.

About us

This is a three-year post-graduate programme, and the successful candidates will be employed by an NHS Wales organisation for the duration of their training and will be based in one of:

  • 1x Hywel Dda University Health Board, TriTech Institute (Clinical Physiology)
  • 1x Swansea Bay University Health Board, Morriston Hospital (Rehabilitation Engineering)
