Job summary

THIS POST IS FIXED TERM/SECONDMENT FOR 12 MONTHS DUE TO MATERNITY COVER.

To be a Lead Tutor for the education, training, mentoring and support programmes for Optometry in Wales. The successful applicant will be responsible for facilitating and delivering training for optometrists to ensure they have the necessary knowledge and skills to work in the NHS in Wales.

This post is maternity cover until 08/06/2025 and is offered on a fixed term contract or secondment basis.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

To manage and be accountable for the development and delivery of multi and intra professional education and training, including mentoring and support for over 750 professionals in Wales.

To ensure the standardisation and quality assurance of education, training and mentoring to optometrists, dispensing opticians, ophthalmic medical practitioners and patients.

To ensure compliance with legislation by providing highly specialist advice that contributes to the education and training of healthcare professionals in order to deliver person centred care.

To retain overall responsibility during education and training events for Regional Tutors and Eye Care Tutors to deliver appropriate training and education.

To provide regular progress reports conveying specialist clinical information to the Head of Optometry.

To act as a role model in the training and development for postgraduate optometry education.

Essential

  • Professional registration with the General Optical Council
  • Sufficient post-registration experience
  • Postgraduate level optometry qualification (e.g. Certificate of glaucoma etc.)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Postgraduate teaching experience and/or teaching qualification
  • An understanding of optometry services in Wales

Desirable

  • Registered as an Independent prescriber with GOC
  • Accreditation to work in Wales (i.e., EHEW and LVSW)

  • Significant experience in delivery acute eye care services
  • Experience of planning and delivering education and training, including a detailed level of knowledge of educational theories
  • Experience in deploying improvement methodologies to develop services
  • Understanding of the external political and social environment, including NHS policy issues and priorities, and the wider agenda of public policy impacting on other relevant agencies
