Main duties of the job

As our Chief DevOps Officer, you will be the driving force behind our DevOps culture, leading product centric delivery via a team of talented engineers and fostering an environment of continuous learning and improvement. Your mission includes:

Strategy and Vision: Develop and execute a cutting-edge DevOps strategy that aligns with our business goals and accelerates our delivery pipelines.

Team Leadership: Inspire, mentor, and guide a high-performing DevOps team, promoting collaboration and innovation.

Tooling and Automation: Drive the selection and implementation of best-in-class DevOps tools and automation practices to streamline our workflows.

Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of continuous improvement, championing DevOps best practices, and reducing deployment friction.

Security and Compliance: Ensure the highest levels of security and compliance in all aspects of our software delivery.

Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate seamlessly with development, QA, and other teams to facilitate smooth and efficient software releases.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • Educated to a minimum of master's degree level, or equivalent experience.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or other related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge and experience of managing digital delivery portfolios, in a product-centric operating model, acquired over a significant period.
  • A postgraduate qualification in related technical subject.
  • Significant knowledge and experience of applying budgeting, benefits tracking and demand management principles to programme, project and product delivery.
  • Track record of successfully delivering major Digital projects / programmes
  • A passion for Portfolio delivery, sharing learning and using both KPI's and management information to drive effective performance and shape a delivery culture focussed on continuous learning and improvement.
  • Emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills capable of generating commitment among partners and key stakeholders to the strategic agenda and the benefits of working in partnership.
  • Ability to demonstrate the critical leadership behaviours, identified as essential to achieving success within NHS

Desirable

  • Significant knowledge and understanding of the NHS, including the political, strategic and operational environment in which it operates. Graduate status of the Major Project Leadership Academy (MPLA), Project Leadership Programme (PLP), or a similar project delivery qualification such as PRINCE2 or APM Registered Project Professional would be an advantage but not necessary

  • Has significant experience in an health organisation-wide, senior technology position, and possess demonstrable experience of the leadership, management, and provision of an extensive technology estate.
  • Demonstrate exceptionally strong leadership skills, having an ability to influence a cross-functional group towards a unified direction, in the face of ambiguity, and having an ability to influence senior business leadership. They must also be able to inspire trust and confidence in others and have sufficient knowledge and gravitas to provide and champion advice / direction at all organisational levels, both internally and externally.
  • Experience managing a budget of no less than £15m across a variety of projects and teams.
  • Have demonstrable experience leading technology teams in a variety of applicable delivery styles, including Agile, classic Project Management, and ongoing delivery with statistical and metrical control of outputs.
  • Have a track record of successfully migrating legacy, on-premise applications to the cloud, as well as optimising a hybrid, multi-cloud environment.
  • Experience of preparing and presenting reports of complex, sensitive or contentious information at senior forums.
