Main duties of the job
We are delighted to offer a 12 month fixed term maternity cover for a qualified Pharmacist to work in the outpatients Pharmacy at University Hospital Southampton Pharmacy Limited (UPL).
UPL is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. It was formed in order to provide dispensing and other professional services to outpatients of the Trust. It also provides a range of over-the-counter medicines and pharmacy services for hospital staff, outpatients and visitors.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic outpatient pharmacy team with a focus on patient care and achieving excellence. This role will enable you to expand your clinical knowledge within a diverse field of medicine.
You will be expected to work in a fast-paced environment working within a large team and providing a patient-centred service, whilst maintaining a healthy work-life balance. This role is perfect for an ambitious pharmacist who can build strong relationships with varying healthcare professionals.
This post would suit an individual with a hospital pharmacy background, or with community pharmacy experience wishing to make a change into the hospital environment.
About us
UPL is a wholly owned subsidiary of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The Pharmacy, located in the main foyer of the hospital, provides a range of over-the-counter medicines and products, as well as pharmacy services for hospital staff, outpatients and visitors.
The Pharmacy is open Monday-Friday (09:00 - 18:00) and Saturday mornings (09:00 - 13:00). Working hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the business on a rota basis over the 6 days.

To validate prescriptions legally Clinically screen, dispense and check outpatient prescriptions. To sort out clinical queries effectively with internal clients: doctors, in-patient pharmacists and other hospital staff. To counsel on the safe and effective use of medicines and provide advice to customers and patients. Be professional and take all the clinical and legal responsibilities of a pharmacist and Be the responsible pharmacist as per GPhC guidelines, when required. To help manage and ensure the smooth running of the pharmacy in the absence of the Superintendent Pharmacist and Lead Pharmacy Technician To act as a mentor to the UPL pharmacists and provide clinical guidance and support to them Line manage junior members of the team

Qualifications/Training
Essential
- UK Masters Degree in Pharmacy, or equivalent qualification
- Registered as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council of Great Britain
- Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practice
Desirable
- Further relevant post-registration qualifications
- Clinical Pharmacy Diploma
- Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of GB
Previous or relevant experience necessary
Essential
- Relevant post registration experience
- Proven track record of providing excellent customer care in a community or hospital pharmacy environment.
- Evidence of working in a multidisciplinary team
- Evidence of being able to cope with change
- Sound knowledge of Pharmacy law, ethics and practice
- Evidence of team working, preferably with leadership role
Desirable
- Both community pharmacy and hospital pharmacy experience.
- Experience of robotic dispensing.
- Experience of stock control
- Experience of using pharmacy JAC computer system
- Accredited for locally commissioned enhanced services e.g. Flu vaccinations, Minor Ailments scheme.
- Experience of using tracking systems
- Ability to take initiative and lead on projects including change management
