Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join our primary care network as a physician associate. Under the supervision of a GP you will be responsible for taking medical histories and physical examinations, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging studies, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic diseases, and providing preventive care. You will also be expected to provide patient education and counselling on health promotion, disease prevention and lifestyle modification. You will collaborate with the practice team to coordinate and provide ongoing patient care, document patient visits and maintain patient records. You will also be required to maintain a high level of professional knowledge and ethical standards in accordance with current medical practice standards.
Main duties of the job
Physician associates in general practice typically provide assessments of patients' health, diagnose illness and injuries, develop treatment plans, and refer patients to specialists. They may also provide education to patients and families on diseases, treatments, and other medical topics, perform routine physical examinations, order and interpret laboratory tests and review clinical correspondence. They collaborate closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality care is provided to patients.

Your day-to-day working will be in busy modern GP training practice in Woking which is part of the Woking WISE 2 Primary Care Network (PCN). Staff working for the PCN are employed under the PCN Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) by North West Surrey Integrated Care Services (NICS) Ltd. - Deliver a high standard of patient care using clinical guidelines and promoting evidence-based practice.
- Provide first point of contact for patients presenting with undifferentiated, undiagnosed problems, utilising history taking, physical examination, problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills to establish a working diagnosis and management plan working in partnership with patients.
- Undertake as agreed consultations for emergency or routine problems including management of long term conditions including undertaking telephone consultations/home visits.
- Instigate necessary invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tests or investigations and interpret findings/reports within the scope of a PAs practice. Discuss the result and implications of laboratory investigations with patients.
- Offer a holistic service to patients and their families, developing where appropriate an on-going plan of care/support with an emphasis on prevention and self-care.
- Refer patients directly to other services or agencies using appropriate referral pathways.
- Work directly with members of the practice primary health care team and support integrated patient centred care through appropriate working with wider primary care / social care networks.
- Identify community health needs and participate in the development of patient/family-centred strategies to address them.
- Work closely with other clinical staff and administrative managers in the setting up and/or improving of practice systems for monitoring/measuring performance against Clinical Governance and Quality Indicator targets.
- Fully document all aspects of patient care and complete all required paperwork for legal and administrative purposes in accordance with relevant standards.
- Work closely with other clinical staff and administrative managers in the setting up and/or improving of practice systems for monitoring/measuring performance against Clinical Governance and Quality Indicator targets and work to deliver the NHS contract pertinent to the practice, including the terms of the Quality and Outcomes Framework and locally enhanced services.
- Pro-actively promote the role of the PA within the practice and externally to key stakeholders and agencies.
