Job summary

At NHS Blood & Transplant (NHSBT) we have an opportunity to join our Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation (OTDT) area of the organisation in the key role of a Senior Commissioning Manager.

You will join us to support the Head of Commissioning and Assistant Director, Transplantation and NHSBT colleagues in the delivery of the Organ Donation Taskforce (ODTF) recommendation to ensure we have a UK-wide network of dedicated organ retrieval teams to ensure timely, high-quality organ removal from all heart beating and non-heart beating donors. At NHSBT, we are responsible for commissioning the retrieval teams and for audit and performance management.

Main duties of the job

The Senior Commissioning Manager will take lead responsibility for a number of retrieval providers, contracts and tenders, providing cover across the UK and deputising for the Head of Commissioning and Assistant Director, Transplantation as necessary.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Commission retrieval services and supporting services (e.g. transport) to meet retrieval standards, including line management of the Operational Contracts Manager for Transport and administration team.
  • Support implementation of Donor Characterisation commissioning support system.
  • Development of safe, high quality, compliant retrieval services including commissioning of novel technologies, where relevant/agreed, and appropriate services to support the transplant pathway from donor management to organ retrieval.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with retrieval providers, transplant commissioners, and other key stakeholders, across four UK countries.
  • Commission from the voluntary sector as required.
  • Communication about commissioning including training and awareness-raising in NHSBT and NHS Trusts.
  • Develop and implement the performance management of organ retrieval services throughout the UK.
