Job summary
Our Testing laboratories carry out large-scale blood grouping and screening for microbiological markers using sophisticated, automated equipment. All donations are screened for the presence of atypical antibodies, and some are also typed for a wide range of antigens so that we can respond to the needs of those patients requiring specific antigen-negative blood.
We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist (Band 7) with specialist knowledge in diagnostic/testing laboratory work. You will have a specialist qualification in Transfusion/Transplantation Science. You will be able to perform, analyse, interpret, both routine and complex testing or diagnostic investigations. The successful applicant for this senior BMS post will be responsible for managing a team of BMS staff and to provide technical leadership for the department. You will act as a mentor positively influencing the team and acting as their day-to-day front-line manager embracing the duties this position requires.
Please note that this position is in-person so the hours will be worked on-site only, shifts are a mixture of 08:00am 16:00pm and 10:00am 18:00pm. Saturday availability is also a requirement.
Main duties of the job
In this role you will be required to:
- Perform, analyse, interpret, document and report routine and complex testing investigations
- Manage the day to day activities of one or more teams in the laboratory and take responsibility for the standard of work and the quality of the results produced
- Provide technical leadership and will make a significant contribution towards the quality management of the section allocated to you
- Train Healthcare Scientist staff and act as a mentor
- Take on some of the duties of the Laboratory Manager in their absence, as required, and will act as a mentor for all laboratory staff and contribute to their training
You may be required to work weekends and Bank Holidays in times of operational difficulty, with suitable prior notice.
