Job summary

As Senior Healthcare Technical Officer you will be part of a team supporting the processing and cryopreservation of life saving stem cell products for bone marrow transplantation as well as the development and manufacture of novel cell therapies for patients.

You will perform a number of technical and scientific tasks - such as preparing samples for testing or storage, environmental monitoring of the lab and the cleanroom suite, management of general tasks in the lab and the cryovat facility, set up and maintenance of equipment, and performing stock management. Well also rely on you to assist in the training and development of other support staff. You'll provide vital support to registered biomedical and healthcare scientists and other senior team members as they undertake specialised work in our Human Tissue Authority (HTA) regulated laboratories.

We're looking for a level 4 qualification e.g. BTEC or HNC in a science subject or a relevant field OR NHSBT Foundation Degree OR equivalent knowledge and experience of working in a manufacturing/ logistics/ supply chain/ laboratory environment.

You'll also, ideally, have a working knowledge of basic IT packages and some experience of working unsupervised in a laboratory/ clinical environment. A good team player, you'll be capable of motivating both yourself and others as you tackle a wide variety of tasks.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be required to perform a range of technical and scientific activities related to the processing of blood or stem cell donations, with the support of the team.
  • You will be required to clean the regulated laboratories to a high specification, including the cleanroom suite, wearing cover-all garments.
  • You will be part of the team managing stock control, including ordering, acceptance of goods and stock rotation.
  • You will be required to undertake precise repetitive manipulation of equipment and carry out routine tasks on a regular basis.
  • You will be required to handle blood or tissue samples and operate a range of equipment.
  • The role will require you to work standard hours and days. There may be occasional opportunities to work evenings or weekends, which will be planned in advance.
  • You will be responsible for the support and training of new and less experienced staff
  • You will be required to manually handle equipment on a daily basis weighing up to 13 kgs, with or without mechanical aids, with appropriate training
