Job Summary

NHS Blood and Transplant is an integral part of the NHS. Operating a network of centres across England we collect around 2 million units of blood, stem cells and tissues a year, converting them into safe and effective blood components, blood, stem cells and tissue products for use in the treatments of patients. Every year, hundreds of lives are saved with the help of donated organs such as hearts and kidneys, but you may not realise that donated tissue such as skin, bone and heart valves can also save and dramatically improve the quality of life for many.

To support and assist in the work of the Regional Tissue Retrieval Team, you will work flexibly across the range of activities as rostered and will additionally assist in developing the service in anticipation of future clinical needs.

Main duties of the job

NHS Blood and Transplant, Tissue Services is the UK's major provider of human tissue for transplant.

Our role is to co-ordinate, recover, process, bank and supply human tissue grafts for use in surgery within the National Health Service (NHS) and independent hospitals in the UK with patient safety our core principle.

  • You will work as part of a team to support and assist in the work of the Colindale Support Team and Retrieval Teams.
  • You will be required to carry out duties related to the preparation of donation kits and consumables for the Surgical and Deceased Tissue Donation programmes.
  • You will monitor and maintain laboratory stocks and supplies on a daily basis to help optimise use of consumables and reduce wastage.
  • Check and distribute incoming goods in a timely manner. Prepare stores orders, record receipt of goods inward.
  • You will be able to lift and carry items up to a weight of 15kgs, with and without the use of mechanical aids.

Must have willingness and ability to undertake travel and spend time away from base to meet the requirements of the post (with appropriate prior notice.
