Lead Specialist Biomedical Scientist

The closing date is 22 February 2026

Job summary

Youll be joining the Hospital Customer Service team leading on a nationally significant project working between NHSBT and hospitals to support resilience of the nations blood supply. Against a backdrop of stock alerts we are keen to extend our partnership with hospitals to look for further improvements in ordering, stock holding and use and how NHSBT can best contribute to effective inventory management in hospital transfusion laboratories.

This is an exciting opportunity to use your transfusion and biomedical science knowledge to make a difference and help NHSBT maintain uninterrupted supply of blood components to hospitals throughout England. NHSBT is taking action throughout the supply chain from donation to issuing to hospitals. This role provides a focal point for partnership working between NHSBT and our hospital customers.

This role is for 12 months and we believe the right person will make a big difference in this time. We will provide data, local knowledge, teamwork, management and clinical support. Youll have regular contact with colleagues that provide services directly to hospitals, the Blood Stocks Management Scheme, Patient Blood Management and our clinical team. You will promote NHSBT and advocate for hospitals and their patients.

Note: This role does provide a hybrid-working option. You will be assigned a base location which could be one of NHSBT main centres/blood centres, which will be confirmed after the final interview and mutually agreed upon.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be responsible for leading a project to support resilience of blood component supply to hospitals and will be working at a national, regional, trust and hospital level to influence and champion best practice. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working extensively with internal teams such as the Blood Stocks Management Scheme, Patient Blood Management, Transfusion Consultants, Logistics and the Hospital Customer Service team.
  • Developing and managing the project to achieve the desired outcomes with hospitals by working with and supporting NHSBT and its partners.
  • Driving the project forward which will require influencing other directorates and external colleagues to meet agreed targets and objectives.
  • Delivering training and education to internal and external stakeholders to improve use of systems, data and stock utilisation / management.
  • The remit of the role spans a wide range of NHSBT products and services including blood and blood components, stock management and patient blood management initiatives.
  • Support the key objectives of the Transfusion function.
  • Working on own initiative and develop responses to complex and challenging situations.
You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice.
