The Statistics and Clinical Research group of NHSBT is responsible for the design and analysis of studies in organ and tissue donation and transplantation, blood donation and transfusion medicine. The group incorporates the NHSBT Clinical Trials Unit, which is responsible for the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials in all areas of NHSBTs activity. The analysis and interpretation of results informs decision-making on developments in donation, transplantation and transfusion, the clinical care of donors and patients, and equity of access to treatment.

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is a Special Health Authority within the NHS, responsible for optimising the supply of blood, organs, plasma and tissues and raising the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of blood and transplant services.

This post is an opportunity for someone with a degree or postgraduate qualification in a statistical subject to be involved in extremely rewarding work using a broad range of statistical skills.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be:

  • Carrying out statistical analyses of data arising from audits and other studies in blood, organ and tissue donation, organ transplantation and transfusion medicine.
  • Reporting results to other staff in NHSBT, specialist advisory groups, the Department of Health, clinical staff in blood and transplantation services and other interested parties.
  • Undertaking statistical analyses for projects and Advisory Group papers associated with organ donation and transplantation, which are overseen by senior staff, and contribute to the work of other areas of the service.
  • Advising on the design, execution and statistical analyses for project work, clinical audits and research studies.
  • Contributing to the preparation and writing of quality assurance procedures and protocols that ensure the work of Statistics and Clinical Research is maintained to appropriate standards.
  • Advising NHSBT staff, members of the transplant community, and those working in blood donation and transfusion medicine, on statistical issues.
  • Undertaking statistical analyses, including analyses of clinical outcome and prognostic factors, in response to requests from NHSBT staff, the board of NHSBT, the Departments of Health and other professionals in transplantation and blood services.
  • Using the statistical package SAS or similar such as R, Python, Stata.
