Job summary

This is a great opportunity to act as a Consultant Clinical Scientist in Transfusion Science. At NHSBT you will be a member of the Red Cell Immunohematology (RCI) senior management team to ensure safe and clinically effective use of red cells and other blood components. You will provide scientific and expert advice to internal and external customers to NHSBT. Your knowledge and experience will ensure that the NHSBT will remains a centre of excellence in transfusion science. Your organisational and leadership skills will ensure the transfusion service continues to deliver a cost effective and responsive service to patients and users of the service. NHSBT will offer training and development opportunities to maintain and enhance your personal development.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be a Consultant Clinical Scientist responsible for the integrity of the scientific and technical knowledge base applicable to transfusion and transplantation Responsibilities include: Providing a primary source of expert advice and opinion, using professional judgement to advise scientists and clinicians on the appropriate investigations to perform on individual patients, the scientific and clinical interpretation of results and appropriate future patient investigation and/or management. Advising on the appropriateness and safety of transfusion in the presence of complex and conflicting evidence. Working alongside the Head of Function and as part of the RCI Senior Management Team (SMT) to provide strategic direction and expert professional leadership. Participating in the ongoing development of, and innovation in service practice using established continuous improvement methodologies. Undertaking data/information gathering, and chair the RCA of any QIs, SUIs or SAEDs, and sign off any remedial actions, providing clinical oversight and input both within the organisation and at a national level. Undertaking research, clinical audits and innovation in the specialist field, resulting in national/international impact and continuous improvement in clinical practice. You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice.

Essential

  • Minimum of 1st or 2nd class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.
  • MSc in transfusion/transplantation or appropriate specialism.
  • DClinSci / D Prof / relevant PhD either completed or demonstrably within 1 year of completion
  • FRCPath in Transfusion Science.
  • Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) registered Clinical Scientist (which must be maintained).
  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).

Experience

Essential

  • In depth knowledge of transfusion science.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) including associated technical skills gained through at least 5 years post registration experience.
  • Understanding of NHSBT and the wider healthcare community.
  • Understanding of budget management.
  • In depth understanding of relevant policies, standards and guidelines eg., Good Manufacturing Practice Good Laboratory Practice, ISO15189 (UKAS), Human Tissue Authority (HTA) FACT Netcord, UKBTS and BSH and other relevant or statutory guidelines.
