Employer: NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) Department: Clinical Directorate Location: To be agreed (see below) Salary: Funding for full salary and expenses from the sponsoring institution, equivalent to the UK Specialist Training Level 4 salary (£65,048). Applications are invited for the position of International Clinical Training Fellow in Transfusion Medicine, commencing in August 2026. This prestigious training opportunity is designed to support the development of future leaders in transfusion medicine through dedicated subspecialty training within NHS Blood and Transplant in England. The post will be fully funded by the fellows home institution, including salary and associated expenses. The successful applicant will join NHSBTs Clinical Directorate, working alongside specialists who contribute to the safe and effective delivery of blood and blood components for patients across the NHS. The fellowship will provide high-quality clinical exposure, training, and professional development within a national organisation renowned for its expertise in transfusion practice, patient blood management, and innovation. The appointed candidate will be based in Birmingham, Bristol, or London, with the final location agreed according to preference and training availability. This post offers a valuable opportunity to gain experience within a leading healthcare system, while contributing to improved patient outcomes in transfusion medicine.

Main duties of the job

There will be a combination of daytime duty work and longer-term quality improvement and project work. Duty work will involve taking queries from within the organisation and NHS Trusts, giving clinical advice to inform decisions around individual patients and components. All clinical work will be supervised by a named consultant. You will be expected to submit at least one project as a conference abstract and/or to a peer reviewed journal during the time in post. As part of the role, you will deliver teaching to doctors, nurses, biomedical and clinical scientists. You will acquire subspecialty skills and experience in: Components, Donor Medicine, Red Cell Immunohaematology, Patient Blood Management (PBM). You will acquire further knowledge of: Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, Manufacturing and Logistics, Cell, Apheresis and Gene Therapies, Haemovigilance, Research, Audit and Quality Improvement. Your supervisor will support you in pursuing an honorary contract with the regional NHS Trust to enable you acquire skills in hospital-based transfusion practice (participation in hospital transfusion team meetings etc.)
