Job summary

Applications are invited for this exciting opportunity with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) to provide clinical leadership across all aspects of Transfusion Medicine, including Patient Blood Management (PBM), Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI), and blood components. The successful candidate will offer expert PBM advice, support appropriate clinical use of blood and plasma products, and work collaboratively with consultants in transfusion medicine to advise NHSBTs Blood Supply Directorate, Regional Transfusion Committees, and wider clinical teams. The role also supports Quality Assurance in transfusion services and contributes to the development of national clinical policy, transfusion guidelines, and recommendations. The post includes participation in daytime and out-of-hours (telephone) on-call rotas for transfusion medicine, RCI, and components. At Oxford Hospitals, duties will be primarily based at the Iron Deficiency Management Service (IDMS), Bicester Community Hospital, with flexibility to work across Trust sites. Responsibilities include leading PBM initiatives, supporting electronic transfusion decision tools in EPR, contributing to clinical governance, audits, and developing transfusion guidelines. NHSBT is the national provider of blood, organs, tissues, stem cells, and diagnostics, and has an active R&D programme in partnership with leading academic centres.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide patient blood management expertise and give advice on appropriate blood and plasma products for clinical practice. They will work with consultants in transfusion medicine in the provision of advice to NHSBTs Blood Supply directorate, and also regionally and nationally to support the Regional Transfusion Committees and NHSBTs other clinical teams, as part of a wider consultant team. This will include supporting the Quality Assurance part of NHSBTs transfusion work. They will actively contribute to the development of national clinical policy in respect to transfusion guidelines and recommendations and will also support the red cell immunology laboratories and components teams as required. They will participate in daytime and out-of-hours on call rotas (by telephone) for transfusion medicine (patient-facing on call rota for NHSBT), and for RCI or Components.
