Job summary
We have an opportunity for a scientist to join our team.
You will be part of a large transformational project in partnership with industry to develop new plasma and platelet components that can be transfused to any patient.
You will be required to operate a range of specialised scientific equipment during controlled investigations of blood component quality. You will analyse and interpret results from such tests, recording and communicating them accurately, both orally and in written form. Work will usually be conducted as part of a team, but with a significant degree of individual responsibility, it is therefore important that you are able to communicate well and accurately, and to mentor others.
The NHS Blood & Transplant Components Development Laboratory is an internationally recognised laboratory based at Cambridge, alongside Addenbookes Hospital on the world-renowned Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The component development laboratory performs a wide range of research and development projects to improve the quality and safety of blood components for transfusion.
Main duties of the job
In this role you will be required to :-
- Lead or assist in the evaluation of new tests of blood component quality or blood component processing. Undertake a wide range of laboratory investigations and scientific procedures using automated and manual techniques.
- Analyse, validate, interpret, record, transmit and report the results of routine and complex investigations.
- Monitor workflow, procedures, equipment and storage facilities and take appropriate action to resolve problems and ensure work is completed within agreed timescales.
- Maintain accurate documentation and audit trails for all work and store samples or materials appropriately to facilitate further work or investigation.

The studies involve the investigation of quality parameters of blood components manufactured, processed or stored under new methodologies, aiming to improve patient outcomes and / or operational flexibility.
You will have the opportunity to learn new skills particularly related to the manufacturing and testing of blood components as well as skills in relevant areas you are interested in.
