Job summary
NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is offering a rare and meaningful opportunity for a Band 7 Specialist Nurse to join our dedicated team in Stem Cell Donation and Transplantation. This permanent role places you at the heart of a life-saving service, where your expertise will directly impact the lives of patients in need of stem cell transplants.
As a Specialist Nurse, you will play a crucial role in supporting the donation process for Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) and bone marrow collections from our donor registry. You will be a key contact for all donor health and travel risk queries, ensuring the safety and readiness of donors whose selfless contributions enable the only available live saving treatment for the recipients.
Working within NHSBT, you will be part of a nationally vital function, supporting and advancing one of the UKs most critical transplant services, and helping to deliver hope to patients awaiting stem cell transplants across the country.
Main duties of the job
Whilst working in this role your responsibilty will be to respond promptly to medical queries from donors and SCDR staff at each stage of the donor pathway. You will complete medical clearance paperwork for unrelated donors after their assessment and investigation by clinicians in our collection centres.
Your duties will also include:
- Escalate medical issues to donor consultants as required.
- Provide support for donors at both short and long-term follow up post-donation.
- Ensure the clinical team meets regulatory, accreditation and other quality and performance targets and participate in clinical audit.
- Responsible for nurse and administrative training related to PBSC and bone marrow provision for new and existing staff collaborating with Therapeutic Apheresis Services registry lead nurse.
- Responsible for training related to PBSC and bone marrow provision across the function for new and existing staff.
- Carry out donor medical assessments and make decisions on donor suitability alongside the SCDT Consultant.
