Job summary

You will help save and improve lives as you contribute to strategies and plans for high quality clinical trials in NHSBT and lead the clinical trial operations in NHSBTs UKCRC registered Clinical Trials Unit. The Unit undertakes trials in all NHSBTs therapeutic areas: transfusion medicine, organ donation and transplantation, tissue and stem cell transplantation.

Your role will be vital to an effective and life-saving clinical trials programme in NHSBT and you will work with the Head of Clinical Trial Statistics to lead the daily activity of the CTU, supported by the Assistant Director of Statistics and Clinical Research and the CTU Director, who is a Consultant Haematologist. You will be a key member of the Statistics and Clinical Research Management Team, contributing more widely to plans and strategies to save and improve lives through research.

We will look to you to bring leadership and a team focus, an innovative and problem-solving approach to our challenging and varied trials and to develop an understanding of NHSBTs therapeutic areas. You will build relationships with internal and external stakeholders and, by leading a passionate, enthusiastic, and high performing team, you will contribute to driving the growth of our Clinical Trials Unit and saving and improving lives.

The post can be based in Oxford or Cambridge, with a flexible hybrid working arrangement to suit those who want to work from home to complement their office time.

  • Designing and overseeing all operational aspects of trials, including the delivery of all studies on time and within budget and scope, in compliance with Good Clinical Practice, standard operating procedures, relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Coordination of internal and external resources for efficient and effective delivery of the clinical trial programme.
  • Providing expert guidance to the CTU and the wider clinical research community, acting with a critical thinking and innovative, problem-solving mindset.
  • Leading the operational team and further developing a culture of learning and continuous improvement, as well as developing team diversity and inclusion.
  • Line managing the Clinical Operations Managers and the Clinical Data Services Manager, acting as a coach and mentor to aid their development and that of the wider team.
  • Acting as a key link with other Trials Units, Sponsor organisations, the UKCRN and other relevant external organisations/groups and will build key relationships with operational departments of NHSBT, to discuss and encourage collaborative projects to improve NHSBTs products.
