Job summary

We are seeking to recruit highly motivated, enthusiastic Sports and Exercise Therapists to join our patient-focused and forward-thinking DGS (Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley) MSK Service.

Main duties of the job

To succeed you must have excellent communication skills and a flexible, proactive approach to delivering first class musculoskeletal services. Training is provided and there are career development opportunities throughout the company. The role involves delivering class based and one to one rehabilitation programmes in Health Centres across DGS.

Requirements:

Degree in Sports and Exercise Therapy or equivalent (Essential)

Car Driver (Essential)

Job responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY/ PURPOSE:

To carry out clinical duties that will include delivery of routine treatment programmes and activities, supervision and direction of clients and where appropriate their carers or relatives in relation to their treatment programme.

To deliver class based rehabilitation programmes within the community setting.

Access to advice and support from qualified staff is routinely provided and clinical work is routinely evaluated. Supervision takes the form of regular formal and informal training, clinical reasoning sessions and case conferences

To administer appropriate equipment and aids as delegated by clinical staff. To support patients when practicing therapeutic/ rehabilitation activities as delegated by clinical staff.

To undertake administrative and cleaning duties as appropriate for the identified clinical area.

Experience within the Health/Fitness industry is desirable but further training will be done in post.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL:

1. To assist in the delivery of lifestyle and condition management activity classes

2. To promote lifestyle change and health benefits of activity both within service and at organised events related to service promotion

3. To assist in the maintenance of departmental records.

4. To be responsible for own records of treatments performed and to collect statistics, as required.

5. To attend departmental meetings as required.

6. To help with reception and clerical duties as identified in each clinical area.

7. To ensure that the department environment is maintained as required at all times including equipment storage, mobility aid requirements and cleanliness of clinical areas as identified.

Communication and Relationship Skills

To communicate rehabilitation related information effectively with patients and carers, tact, and reassurance will be required. Informed consent must be gained prior to treatment.

There is a requirement to maintain appropriate and meaningful treatment documentation in accordance with Trust and professional guidelines.

Barriers to effective communication will regularly be evident. These will include cognitive impairment, altered perception as well as physical impairments related to condition or age. Appropriate solutions to address the issues should be explored. Support with difficult communication issues will be available from clinical staff.

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Analysis and judgement will be involved in evaluating the patients response to treatment. Future treatment planning will be based on clients response to activity and good observation skills are important, analysis and treatment planning will be directed by qualified staff.

There will also be a responsibility to observe any deterioration or unexpected change in the clients condition and report this back to qualified staff in a timely and appropriate manner.

Responsibility for Policy/ Service development

To contribute to discussions regarding service development, quality initiatives and clinical service practices.

Responsibility for Financial and Physical Resources

To be responsible for ensuring the effective selection and safe use of equipment and aids.

Will check mobility and other equipment for safety and signs of deterioration and where appropriate take responsibility for arranging replacement equipment.

To monitor stock and order supplies.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to GCSE Level or equivalent. Maths and English at C or above or equivalent qualification/demonstrable experience
  • Degree in Sports and Exercise Therapy or equivalent
  • Willingness to undertake relevant departmental training in order to achieve required clinical competencies

Desirable

  • Educated to NVQ 3 Level or equivalent in a relevant related field (e.g access to health care)
  • Portfolio evidence of relevant learning
  • Qualifications within the health and fitness industry

Experience

  • Detailed understanding of the role of a Therapy Assistant
