Job summary

To work under the direction and supervision of the GPs, Practice Nurses and Practice Manager and strictly in accordance of practice guidelines and protocols. The Health Care Support Worker will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of patient care. The post may also include some administrative duties. Certain duties may require further training which will be provided by the practice to the right candidate

Main duties of the job

  • Undertaking general treatment room consultations, giving appropriate health promotion advice and entering the data on the EMIS medical system

  • Undertaking simple examinations & health questionnaires for new and other patients registering at the practice

  • Assisting GPs undertaking minor surgery procedures, insertion of coils/implants

  • Phlebotomy and Urinalysis

  • Minor Dressings

  • Administer vaccinations as per protocol

About us

Our friendly and expanding primary care team consists of 5 GP Partners, 3 Salaried GP's, Physiotherapist, Practice Nurses, HCSW and Administrative staff.

We are a busy GP Practice based in Llansamlet, Swansea.

Job description

Job responsibilities

This Job Description is a reflection of the current position and the post holder should expect that it may be subject to variation from time to time as the needs of the practice change. The Job Description is therefore intended to be flexible and is subject to review and amendment in the light of changing circumstances, following consultation with the post holder.

1. Nursing

New patient registration checks, including completing any necessary paperwork

BP monitoring

Pulse rate and rhythm

Temperature

Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory

Phlebotomy*

Weight monitoring (incl BMI)

Offer Health Promotion advice/intervention as required

Minor dressings*

Remove sutures/clips

Perform ECGs*

Ear syringing as per protocol*

Simple pill checks

Ensure any specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary forms

Administer influenza, pneumococcal and Vitamin B12 vaccinations as per protocol*

Assist with vaccine/cold storage including the monitoring and recording of fridge temperatures

Chaperone for clinical examinations/procedures

Monitor stock levels and order supplies of:

o IUCD

o Injections (Depo-Provera, depo-medrone Vitamin B12, Zoladex, Prostap & Decapeptyl)

o Disposable clinical equipment as required for e.g. Minor Surgery/dressings

o Specimen bottles

o Gloves

o Couch rolls

o Sanitising gel & soap

o Order supplies identified by cleaners paper towels, toilet roll

Check and re-stock Drs emergency bags and record check as per protocol

Restock and tidy GPs and Treatment Rooms on a weekly basis

Report and discuss condition of patients causing concern with the Practice Nurses or GPs as appropriate and receive advice

To assist the PNs/GPs in emergency management of patients

To assist the PNs/GPs and other members of the PHCT with other duties as required

Ensure safe disposal of used and contaminated materials and follow infection control as per protocol

Ensure accurate completion of all necessary computer entries/other documentation associated with patient health care

Be aware of the legal responsibilities with regards to your work

Prepared to be adaptable to the changing needs of the practice and patients

2. Administration

Use practice systems to maintain proper stock control

Assist with recall and implementation of any additional work requested by e.g. Public Health Wales in maintaining patient health examples include vaccine catch-up programmes and during outbreaks in the community e.g. measles/MMR

Record information and activities undertaken with patients and carers in an accurate and timely fashion on computer system

Book HCSW/PN appointments for patients as and when required

Participate in audit e.g. Hazardous Waste audit if required

The post-holder will implement and lead on a full range of promotion and management of their own and others health & safety and infection control as defined in the Practice Health & Safety Policy and the Practice Infection Control Policy. This will include (but will not be limited to):

Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines

Use all equipment both clinical/non-clinical in a safe and responsible way, adhering to instruction manual. Report any faults to Practice Nurses/Practice Management

Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks

Actively identifying, reporting and correction of health & safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised

Be able to identify the risks to health of microbiological and chemical hazards within the working environment according to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)

Making effective use of the training to update knowledge and skills

Using infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean and safe way, free from hazards. Initiate remedial/corrective action where needed or escalation to Practice Nurses/Practice Manager

Monitoring practice facilities and equipment in relation to infection control, ensuring that provision of hand cleansing facilities, sanitising gels etc are sufficient to ensure a good clinical working environment. Lack of facilities to be expedited as appropriate.

Promote and maintain good hand hygiene

Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory/contractual/professional requirements and good practice guidelines

Safe management of sharps procedures including training, use storage and disposal

Responsible for the correct and safe management of specimens, including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transportation
