Job summary

We are looking for a friendly, enthusiastic and experienced nurse to join our clinical team of GPs, Practice Nurse and Health Care Assistants at our practice on Anglesey.

Applications are welcome from candidates with practice nursing experience or other nurses with substantial post registration qualification considering a career change.

We are looking for between 12-18 hours per week, however if you think you are the right candidate but are looking for more or less hours than this, then please apply and include this information clearly in your application as we do have a degree of flexibility

Work independently to make clinical judgements and decisions. Reporting direct to the GPs and Practice Manager

About us

We are situated on the west coast of Anglesey, our main site is in Bodorgan and we have branch sites in Llanfaelog and Gaerwen. We have a list size of approx 4850 patients and we dispense at all our sites.

We have a team of 3 GP partners, one practice nurse, one health care assistant and a phlebotomist working alongside our team of dispensers/receptionists. We are looking to add to the team by recruiting an additional practice nurse to work as part of the team for 12-18 hours per week

Job Summary

Work as part of the primary healthcare team providing general medical services (see job description) to the patients of the practice. To assess and manage the care of practice patients to include treatment, preventative care, screening & patient education. Recognise own training needs and work within competencies. Work independently to make clinical judgements and decisions. Reporting direct to the GPs and Practice Manager

Practice Nurse

  • Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by GPs

  • Fully competent in all Health Care Assistant tasks e.g. venepuncture, ECGs, INR monitoring, BPs, urinalysis, new patient medicals, basic dressings, ABPM, chaperoning.

  • Dressings/wound care/ ulcer care management

  • Assist with minor surgery

  • Assist with IUD insertions

  • Minor injuries

  • Removal of sutures

  • BPs and lifestyle advice

  • Cytology

  • Basic family planning/contraception advice/sexual health

  • Advice and refer STIs

  • Breast Awareness

  • Swabs

  • IM & SC Injections, inc but not limited to Depo Provera, Gonadorelins, Denosumab

  • Adult Immunisations eg. tetanus, flu, pneumococcal, covid etc

  • Travel advice and vaccinations

  • Lifestyle advice diet, smoking, exercise & alcohol intake

Administrative

  • Ordering treatment room stock/vaccinations, to maintain adequate stock levels with due regard to the practice drug budget, practice resources and reimbursement

  • When and how to liaise with specialist nurses and outside agencies

  • Maintaining effective recall systems in collaboration with administrative staff

Health & Safety

The post-holder will implement and lead on a full range of promotion and management of their own and others health and safety and infection control as defined in the practice Health & Safety policy, the practice Health & Safety manual, and the practice Infection Control policy and published procedures. This will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines

  • Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory / contractual / professional requirements, and good practice guidelines

  • Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements

  • Management and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practice including provision, ordering, availability and ongoing correct usage by staff

  • Responsible for hand hygiene across the practice

  • Ownership of infection control and clinically based patient care protocols, and implementation of those protocols across the practice

  • Active observation of current working practices across the practice in relation to infection control, cleanliness and related activities, ensuring that procedures are followed and weaknesses / training needs are identified, escalating issues as appropriate

  • Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks across clinical and patient process

  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills, and initiate and manage the training of others across the full range of infection control and patient processes

  • Monitoring practice facilities and equipment in relation to infection control, ensuring that provision of hand cleansing facilities, wipes etc are sufficient to ensure a good clinical working environment. Lack of facilities to be escalated as appropriate.

  • Safe management of sharps procedures including training, use, storage and disposal

  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean and sterile, and safe way, free from hazards. Initiation of remedial / corrective action where needed or escalation to responsible management

  • Actively identifying, reporting, and correction of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised

  • Keeping own work areas and general / patient areas generally clean, sterile, identifying issues and hazards / risks in relation to other work areas within the business, and assuming responsibility in the maintenance of general standards of cleanliness across the business in consultation (where appropriate) with other sector managers
